What is Dharma, and what is Religion

From: Dr Ranjeet Singh < >

What is Dharma, and what is Religion

Dear Shree Nitin Mehta jee,

We were glad to know that you were invited to address Inter-Faith Group of East-Bourne. But some points in the gist of your talk posted by you do not seem true and in accord with facts. They therefore ask for elucidation and substantiation.

You described Hindu Dharma as a religion; could we know how?

Are these two words synonyms? Do they mean and denote the same? We think not.

So far as we know and our knowledge and understanding goes, they have, they carry and denote separate and different meanings, message and signification.

The word Religion according to the Chambers Dictionary is:

“belief in, acceptance of, or non-rational sense of, a superhuman unseen controlling power or powers, with the emotion and morality connected therewith: rites or worship: any system of such belief or worship.”

But Dharma on the other hand is and has been defined in the Hindu scriptures as:

In short, it is the power/ the force/ the Shakti that preserves/ holds/ maintains and sustains the entire creation and produces the feeling of Sukha, Aatma Sukha and ultimately leading to Liberation/ Moksha or  Mukti.

Now how is this known what dharma is? The answer is: from the Vedaadi Shaastras. We substantiate:

·       शास्त्र योनित्वात्। (Braah. Soo. 1:1:3)

·      वेद प्रणिहितो धर्मो ह्यधर्मस्तद्विपर्ययः। (Bhaag 6:1:40)

·      श्रुतिस्मृति विहितो धर्मः। (Vasisht Dh. Soo. 1:4:6)

·      चोदना लक्षणोऽर्थो धर्मः। (Poo. Mima. 1:1:2)

An important point and feature disclosed by the Shaastras is that it is Aachaara Prabhava – born out of conduct – and said to be Param/ supreme/ or highest Dharma:

When that is so how could religion be or said to be a synonym of Dharma, and Hindu or Sanaatana Dharma could be called and designated as religion? How could it be included in that category and dealt with, compartmented and classified with them?

You have written next:

“Known as the Aryan people they had settled in many parts of the world.”

That would mean you are still sticking, subscribing and clinging to the long discarded, refuted, dismissed and rejected so called Aryan Invasion theory of the sly Westerners and their agent musketeers: Christian Missionaries.

Could we know Nitin jee how the word ‘Arya’ has – and can have – a racial connotation so that one could claim: “they had settled in many parts of the world”?

Were we aliens/ foreigners in our own land, this holy land we address as ‘Mother’, were born in and inherited from our ancestors and had lived and died for? Does that and would that not mean we had migrated into it from outside and settled here and were therefore not its original indigenous inhabitants?

The theory put forward by them is that the Aryans came into this land systematically in bands and batches from 1500 B.C. onwards – in other words, some 3,500 years from now.

But how could that be – and how could it at all be possible – because Bhagavaana Shree Krishna, a Chandra Vanshi Kshatriya, had taken Avataara and tread this very land some 3,700 years prior to even that – and this been duly confirmed and proved by the archaeological findings of Dr. SR Rao with his discovery of the city of Dwarika on the sea bed near Kutch, Gujarat?

How could He have been one of our ancestors and lived here had we come from outside in 1500 B.C.?

Or is it that He was not an ‘Aryan’ and our ancestor but one of the pre-Aryan people dwelling this land?

But that is not the only dilemma. There is the question of Bhagavaana Shree Rama, who had incarnated and ruled this land from Ayodhya some 9 Lac years prior even to Bhagavaana Shree Krishna. How would the Aryan Invasion theorists explain and account for this?

One shall also have to explain how this land came to have/ acquire the names Bhaarata and Hindustan, if we were outsiders and had come and settled here only about 3500 years before. We say this because Mahaaraj Bharat, after whom this country acquired the name Bhaarata, was even an ancestor of Bhagavaana Shree Rama and the time of his rule is millenniums before Him?

We are afraid you shall have to explain and account for all these and prove and validate what you had stated.

You have next claimed and written:

“Hindus believe that all paths are valid”.

But how did you and how could you say that? Should you not have corroborated your statement?

Do they believe then that the paths of the Abrahamic religions of the dessert are also valid – and equally valid as ours? If yes; could we know how and on what basis and pramaanas? Have the scriptures, source and authorities of Hindu Dharma, say that? Any Acharyas/ any Avataaras has preached that paths of the non-Vedics are also equally valid?

We ask: do the paths propounded by the dessert religions also lead to the same destination: Moksha/ Nirvana/ complete liberation?

We do not and cannot agree and so believe.

In fact, as far as our knowledge goes, they do not have even a concept of Moksha/ Nirvaana or Liberation in their religions/ faiths. How can all paths be valid then and lead to the same destination?

You are right “we should accept diversity and welcome it”, but should you not have elucidated which diversity and diversity in what and of what? – of Jehovah, his only son Jesus and Satan; Allah, his final prophet and Shaitan; inability of their ‘Gods’ to  take Saakaara form and Avataara and the teaching of iconoclasm – ‘smash their temples, break their alters’, ‘destroy the idols’, and convert or slaughter?

When all others – other religions – do not believe in and accept the Law of Karma, Punarjanma, Incarnation and personification of the Supreme Being; how could it be said that they accept the diversity as true and an established fact and a law?

Hoping to hear,

And with best regards,

Dr. Ranjeet Singh

Missionaries in India: Conversion or Coercion?

Philip Goldberg Interfaith Minister, author of ‘American Veda: How Indian Spirituality Changed the West’

Imagine you’re poor and living in a rural area. Your child gets sick. You manage to transport her to a hospital or clinic. To your relief, the condition is treatable. But the cost of treatment is not just beyond your means, it’s beyond your imagining. However, says the kindly health care worker, you can get the treatment free of charge. All you have to do is renounce the centuries-old traditions of your people and convert to a foreign religion.  Such offers are being made to desperate people in the villages and tribal areas of India.

I just returned from a month in that country, to mark the Indian publication of my book,

American Veda. In the 18 cities I visited, the most frequently mentioned topic was the shady tactics of certain missionaries.

Not all of them, mind you. Not the intrepid souls who work selflessly to help the poor, the afflicted, and the illiterate, in the spirit of their savior’s exhortation to serve “the least of these.” Such missionaries have been welcome in India for centuries, and the Hindus I spoke to are grateful for their good works. What is causing consternation and anger is a new breed of zealots, heavily financed by American fundamentalists, who seem driven to pile up numbers like door-to-door salesmen racking up commissions. Determined, fervent, and creative in pursuit of souls to save, they sound more like the snake-oil hucksters of legend than servants of Christ.

Targeting mainly the impoverished and uneducated, some of their tactics make the hospital bargain I described earlier look as reputable as ordering a book from Amazon. I was told of missionaries giving people temporary jobs in return for converting, and then threatening them with job loss — not to mention eternal damnation — if they reconvert to Hinduism. Families have apparently been torn apart because the converts are made to disassociate from the heathen.

I heard about missionaries who dress in orange robes to look like swamis. Gullible and desperate villagers are told that their traditional gods are actually corrupted versions of Christ; that the venerable saints and sages of India’s past were really Christians; that the three horizontal stripes traditionally drawn on the foreheads of Shiva devotees stand for the Holy Trinity; that the Upanishadic prayer that includes “Lead us from darkness to light” was meant as a cry for Jesus to save them.

A mother is sick. A father loses his source of income and can’t feed his family. The bus filled with youngsters suddenly “stalls” on a dangerous mountain road. Well , say the missionaries, try praying to your Hindu gods. Hmmm, imagine that: nothing changes. Well then, see what happens if you pray to Jesus. Wow! Lo and behold! The mother receives medicine. The father gets a one-day job that puts rice on the table. The bus engine starts again! If one prayer to Jesus produces miracles like those, imagine what converting will do!

I heard about people being told that their misfortune derives from their worship of Hindu deities, because the idols are really forms of the Devil; about village strongmen being paid to coerce conversions from other villagers; about women given a choice of walking a mile to haul water from their usual source or using the new well conveniently dug in front of a church. The price? Conversion, of course.

I don’t know if these egregious actions are commonplace or rarities. I do know that they are dishonorable. They’re about coercion, not spiritual conversion; extortion, not the exchange of ideas. And, if I may say so as a non-Christian, they are an affront to Jesus, whom every Hindu I’ve ever met regards as a holy man of the highest order if not an incarnation of God. I can’t help thinking that he would be as outraged by the deception being perpetrated in his name as he was about the moneylenders in the temple.

I told people in India that most American Christians would be appalled if they knew what was being done by their overly aggressive brethren. I was tempted to wait until after Christmas to test that thesis, but I decided that this season of goodwill might be the ideal time. So, what do you think, my Christian sisters and brothers? Is there some cosmic war for souls going on in which anything goes? Or, are there rules of engagement that civilized people should observe? What would Jesus say?

Islamic Imperialism in India
‘Swords flashed like lightning amid the blackness of clouds, and fountains of blood flowed like the fall of setting star. The friends of God defeated their opponents… the Musalmans wreaked their vengeance on the infidel enemies of God, killing 15,000 of them… making them food of the beasts and birds of prey… God also bestowed upon his friends such an amount of booty as was beyond all bounds and calculations, including five hundred thousand slaves, beautiful men and women.’

The Abdication Of The Intelligentsia In India

The Abdication Of The Intelligentsia In India

Dr. Babu Suseelan

Despite the constant barrage of evidence about the devastating and often deadly jihadi terrorism, coercive and deceptive religious conversion of Hindus, Maoist violence, corruption and looting of the Sonia gang and other criminal politicians, most of the majority intellectuals in India and their silence is a central concern.  When national conflict is sopped up and internalized, when it became locked inside the mind of intellectuals, and the media pundits, it cannot be solved. The pathological consequences become progressively more fixed. Instead of activating a debate and projecting it for public interaction, India’s intellectuals and media pundits distort the facts, and provide the public with malignant justification of corruption and dynastic rule. The submerged political corruption and political conflict becomes entrenched, and leads progressively to distortion and dangerous intensification of conflicts. In other words, the longer the delay and longer the periods of exposing by the intellectuals, and the media, there is less chance there to reverse the alien rule, political  corruption and the loot.

India is lucky to survive as a nation for thousands of brutal Islamic and Christian rule. They have achieved their strength, expanded their territory, looted our wealth, and forcefully converted our people. But the desert dogmatist forgot reality into account. The invaders and looters forgot the law of Karma. The desert invaders and western colonial masters forgot the real meaning of freedom and the spiritual nature of Hindus. The cruel invaders and Christian colonialists were lucky. Hindus have never resisted their invasion, looting, coercive religious conversion, temple take over with arms. We have employed passive resistance and got independence. Unlike Muslims and Christians, Hindus, have never invaded any other country or terrorized them. We were not interested in forcefully converting our looters and invaders. The unique feature of India’s situation is that Indian Hindus cannot permit themselves the luxury of denial, apathy, indifference and silence. Hindus and India cannot afford to be passive, inactive and indifferent in world affairs.

India is under siege. Chinese are marching on our borders. Pakistan Islamic army is threatening us with war. Northeast is burning. Kashmir is already gone. Kerala Muslims are demanding a separate Malabar state for Muslims. Western Christian nations are arming and directing converted Christians (Tamil Tigers) to take over the south. Missionaries are advising our converted people to take up arms (Maoists) to murder Hindu nationalists. India is administered by people who are born abroad. An Italian Catholic Sonia and her cronies of the anti-National Congress party are busy introducing a bill in our parliament. If the bill is passed and implemented Hindus are doomed. India cannot be complacent or move forward with peace and progress, unless the intellectuals, academicians, media pundits, military personals, bureaucrats, and politicians persuade the public the change of direction is warranted.  And the new paths shown by Modi are in fact the right ones.

It is natural and genuine for the majority Hindus to ask the reasonable question. Where are India’s intellectuals, and Media Pundits? It is a distressing recent phenomenon in India is the abdication of intelligentsia from its traditional role of influencing the public at large.

Nations are known all over the world, not it produced thieves, warriors, brutal dictators but how many intellectuals and great writers countries have produced. India is known around the world not because India was ruled by Butcher Baber, or Hindu murderer Aurangzeb, but by Veda Vyasa, Valmeeki, Sankara, Ramanuja, Madhva, Kanada, Prabhupad, Swami Vivekananda and C.V. Raman. Greece is known around the globe not because all Greeks were forcefully converted into Christianity, but pre-Christian Greece produced some of the great thinkers of the world (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Aristophanes, and Hippocrates etc.)

Where are India’s intellectuals when the Italian Mafia gang decided to allow construction of a Mosque and the Islamic study center at the foothills of Thiriupathy Venketeswara Temple, one of the largest and richest Hindu Temple in the world? In recent years in India, the print media and television,  (the chief conduit of the mass media) tended to put itself at the service of alien slave masters and corrupt politicians. Where are the academic Intellectuals of India? Do they have no opinion on several sensitive issues?  Do our intellectuals want to see Hindus suffer? The gravity and closed channel thinking of the desert dogmas and alien rule never bother India’s academic elites? The severity of the present situation in India requires strong words and deeds from Indian intellectuals, Journalists, and the Masses.

Universities and colleges are teaching deconstruction or how to discard one’s own culture. India’s political arena requires an unremitting struggle to advocate our Hindu philosophy, is it very difficult for India’s intellectuals, academicians, and politicians, ,journalists and social scientist, human right activists  to find a common language with ordinary Hindus.

India’s intellectuals are not free, outspoken or brave enough  as they need to be.  When Kachan Illiaha issue a statement against Hindus or   issue a historically inaccurate statement against prominent Hindus to please their alien slave masters, India’s intellectuals remain silent, hopping to join the enemy camp. The issue is not what a man afford to say, but what he must say. I may say that many Indian intellectuals failed in their duty to stand against problems and issues created by our anti-national Sonia criminals. India’s intellectuals and academicians must wage a war against their policies and programs that they firmly believe to be catastrophe

History is replete with examples of the influence of intellectuals in society. Thinkers and writers have shaped ideologies that have transformed the world. Philosophers put together the system of many regimes and countries. Thinkers like Rousseau, Voltaire, Sartre, Descartes, Spinoza,( FRANCE)Toynbee, Russell, Barkley, zlribintz (Briton)  Hume, Sankara, Ramanuja, Madhva, Kanada, Charvaka, Bose, C.V. Raman, Swami Vivekananda, Aurobindo (India), Kant,(Germany)  and Herzl,(Austria) have enlightened the public and more open to proposals for changing the national policies  than ever before.

The Intelligential in India has an important role to play. Indian intellectuals ought not go with the existing system to tear apart our country, or endorse alien dogmas which they know are encouraging our people for whimsical subversive ideas and activities.  The changes required in India, which amount to a total alterations of the climate of opinion created by the pseudo-secular, atheist, nihilist, dynasty leader Nehru and his anti-national , anti-Hindu congress party. India’s intellectuals ought to mold the public opinion to Hindu Dharma, and change the indoctrinated mindset of the majority.

Indian intellectuals can suppress Islamic resistance and Christian opposition, and the struggle is for India’s Hindu identity and the argument is a moral one to India’s identity. A change of policy is imperative to ensure India’s survival. India, imitating alien ideologies unsuited for India’s existence should be discarded. Our soft-hearted and soft-headed approaches are condemned by extremists and that positions of high morality, are a luxury that India cannot afford. Better that India should be bold with dogmatists, extremists, Maoists, Jihadi Terrorists, Marxists and Conversion Mafia.  India must be dominant in power, and strong in arms, and must have the power to kick our enemies deeply entrenched in India.  It is better to emphasize that, if India is to survive, a change in policy is essential. Events in India should be exploited by intelligentsia to direct public attention to the need for a change in public attitude

Indian academicians and intellectuals, politicians and lay person must be discussing the dangers that closed dogmas (Islam and Christianity) pose to India, to the status of Hindus to the world, and to Hinduism. The dangers denial, apathy, indifference, and ‘all Religions are the same” tolerance, compromise should be candidly discussed and presented, with full exposure of the catastrophes produced by our false tolerance and compromise with alien extremist ideology.

The principal mission of India’s intellectuals, academicians, politicians, bureaucrats and military personals is to inculcate a strong Hinduttva attitude, particularly in matters that concerns Inndia. India’s future depends more on this than any other factors.

Globalization: A Gigantic Deception for India

Dr. BABU SUSEELAN

For hundreds of years, western Christian colonialists and imperialists have plundered the wealth of India and other third world countries. Now these forces are back again in the name of Free Trade and Globalization. Multinational Corporations and Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCO’s) supported by western Christian nations are facilitating their activities in India, Latin America and Africa. These multinational organizations could not exist or survive without hegemonic ideologies, the same ideology that promoted colonialism. The goals of Freed Trade and globalization include: endless accumulation of profits; the commercialization of everything; introduction of extreme, capitalist, Christian culture; restructuring of society to create hierarchies of inequality; and marketing of junk goods and throwaway values in the name of innovation, fashion, change, and economic expansion. The traditional economic system is reorganized, land is commodified into property that can be owned and sold, and the economy is reorganized for capitalist monopoly. As a result long-accepted life worlds become disruptive, the real people experience culturicide, suffer human indignity.
Dangerous consumer goods discarded in the west are dumped in India in the name of Free Trade and Globalization. TCO’s are investing huge amounts of drug money in infrastructure development, commercial property and banking. It is beneficial to these corporations, extremely harmful to India. Unrestrained western style consumerism is the true source of the social and family conflicts that are tearing our country apart, because it is depleting the non-economic side of life. In the name of consumerism, it imposes costs on those least able to pay, undermines traditional family values, and promotes inequality, division, and impoverishment, not just improvement.
Globalization tends toward cultural hegemony while promoting flimsy values and consumerism that obliterate national cultures. It is causing increased fragmentation adulteration of our sacred culture.
Globalization is a trick to pollute our culture; it is intrusive, invasive, introduces excessive consumerism, materialism and destroys traditional Hindu family values. It is just another deceptive name for de-construction of Hindu society, life style and culture. In the name of globalization, multinational corporations and Transnational Criminal Organizations are strengthening their dominance in India. They are supplanting the primacy of our nation, destroy our social fabric and tradition, promote religious conversion, and introducing western Christian values. This level of conflict and crisis represent an increase over earlier level of crisis created by colonialism, communism and imperialism. Contrary to the widespread economic perception, free trade and globalization would increase and distribute wealth; it has created communal conflict and terrorism across the nations. Multinational corporations and western governments with capitalist hegemonic policies rationalize surplus extractions, wealth concentration, and political inequalities. At the same time, rich nations constraints third world countries through policies of trade barrier, restrictive economic policies, exclusion, discrimination and repression. Then it constructs myths and stereotypes that “ideologically camouflage” their exploitation of third world economy. To maintain their dominance, western governments create, sustain social and ethnic crisis in other countries. At the end of 1990s, there were 275 groups in 116 countries-representing one-fifth of world population-at risk of (a) violent conflict. Western government and missionary organizations finance ethnic groups, cultural war, open rebellion, and ethnic conflict in countries posing a threat to the capitalist civilizational project,
Under the guise of free trade and investment opportunity, Transnational Criminal Organizations are facilitating their criminal activities in India. TCO’s are moving money and goods to India taking advantage of loose tax law enforcement, relaxed rules on money flows, easy facilitation of money laundering and increased inaction of customs and security forces. TCO’s work with little regard for the safety, security, integrity and social customs of our country. TCO’s routinely corrupt our law enforcement officials, politicians, and judges and eliminate anyone they are not able to buy and who dares to stand in their way. They rely on violence, murder, kidnapping and intimidation to achieve their goals of profit taking and looting money out of India.
Globalization and free trade enabled consumers to buy useless, glittering gadgets and goods. Yet, beneath the glittering show of western goods, there is a deepening social crisis in India. Take for example, in kerala, a highly westernized state; suicide rate is the highest in the world. There is spectacular rise in all forms of crime, family breakdown, child abuse, and teenage pregnancy, widespread adoption of ruinous lifestyles and destructive behavior, and exponential growth of drug and alcohol use. Then there is AIDS, mental illness, and moral cowardice, and promiscuous behavior.
Consumerism in the name of globalization destroys our traditional economic system and makes fundamental change of direction that will tear apart our family, society and nation. Uncontrolled power of the TCO’s and the economic power of transnational corporations will destroy the organic basis of Hindu families, causing insecurity, poverty, and depletion of earnings, family connections, violence and crime. The increasing disparity between family income and what they must pay for useless consumer goods force families to borrow money from loan sharks controlled by TCO’s. Moneylenders’ size and power allow them to charge exorbitant interest and families become victims of money mafia. Overwhelmed by debt, many commit suicide. It also leads to disintegrating families, persistent poverty, and high levels of divorce, mental illness, alcohol and drug abuse.
In order to regain our eternal Hindu values of our nation, we must confront consumerism and materialism imported in the name of globalization. Unless it is stopped, the importation of discarded western goods and values will soon cause irreparable damage to our society. Hindu families, which once were both economic and non-economic and they were able to instill a sense of identity and cultural values. Multinational corporations have no interest in the welfare of families and they threaten the economic security of families and the nation.
What is needed is globalization of our all inclusive, pluralistic, spiritual philosophy. This globalization of our broad, eclectic and uplifting philosophy of life is essential for the good of humanity as a whole. Hindu Dharsanas contain infallible guidelines to personal enrichment. They contain the prescription for a good family, community and a good nation. India’s best hope lies in the renewed ascendance of Hindu values. Hindus have a duty to promote and globalize Hindu philosophy of life. Today or tomorrow someone’s values are going to prevail in India. Why not ours? Why not transmit our eternal, spiritual, universal values around the globe?

The greatest Heist in Indian history..How Indian History was changed and we didn’t even notice. Part 1:The lost eon 4th Century AD to 1174 A.D

The Gupta dynasty as a dynasty, ended in about 6th century AD. However, the last meaningful king that our History textbooks bother to mention is Chandragupta II, whose reign ended in 4th Century AD. And then, the scene is fast forwarded to the point where Mohammad Ghauri invaded India in 1191, to start the Delhi Sultanate which would then metamorphose into the Islamic Empire. What does the above line tell you?

It tells you that an average tenth grader actually knows nothing about what happened in India in the intervening period between the Guptas and the Delhi Sultanate (A time period of about 800 years). At least they do not think it was worth remembering. To be fair they are not to blame, especially when you consider our academicians have dedicated ONE  single Chapter in the Seventh standard History textbook, to cover the period when it was Indians who ruled the land..

Yes… ONE CHAPTER, COVERING A PERIOD OF A THOUSAND YEARS ENCOMPASSING THE WHOLE OF THE INDIAN CIVILAZTION. One Chapter from history lessons stretching across the fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and the tenth grades of CBSE. One insignificant chapter in over five years of schooling dealing with a period of more than one thousand years.

This is that chapter.. Click on the image if you have the time and patience to revisit your seventh standard History textbook

Now why only one chapter, is known only to the enlightened souls who designed those textbooks. And as a result of either their deliberate oversight or perhaps pure ineptitude, most of the school children do not know have any idea about

The Harsha Empire

This empire was founded by King Harshavardhana. This guy ascended the throne immediately after the Gupta dynasty, at an age when we aren’t allowed to have a driving license or have a drink. He became an emperor at the age of  sixteen in about 606 AD. He went on to capture what is today called North India (Including Kashmir) and Pakistan, His empire at its greatest extent looked something like this

He actually united all these states, something that we struggle to do even today!!!

He fought almost 300 battles in the 41 years he ruled with a win loss ratio that even Novak Djokovic would envy;  299-1. Uniting all these states, I guess was trouble even then.

Not only was he adept as a fighting machine, but actually authored three full length Sanskrit plays Ratnavali, Priyadarsika and Nagananda, while he was busy conquering.  Nagananda especially is considered one of the greatest plays ever written in Sanskrit literature. It is thought to be the first play ever to have five acts where the tone changes midway from Romance to horror and ends with the villain turning into the hero. This guy introduced plot twists and ‘cut to the chase‘ in the 6th century AD. And all of that was probably thought in the middle of a battle.

Amongst Harsha’s other achievements, was that he was the first to abolish Sati as a rule in his kingdom, some 800 years before Raja Ram Mohan Roy was even born. He was a major patron of the Nalanda University, and was the title sponsor of the ramparts around it, for protection from invaders and other pricks. No wonder Nalanda expanded singularly because of this guys patronage.

Harsha was the first King to have ever established a diplomatic relationship with China, with ambassadors and gifts being exchanged in 630 AD. And last but not the least the guy in the pic below lived  in the kingdom of Harsha, and was patronized by this emperor so that he could work on his field of expertise.

This was the guy who went on to INVENT THE ZERO!!!!

Surely Emperor Harsha deserves more than the 10 lines that he currently gets in our history textbook.

OR

The Pala dynasty

This dynasty was founded by Gopala in Bengal in the year 705 AD. This guy was not your run-of-the-mill type of tyrant that were prevalent those days.

Gopala was DEMOCRATICALLY elected by the people of his kingdom. He was the FIRST EVER democratically elected ruler in South Asia, perhaps even Asia and even the world. Giving people right to elect the ruler wasn’t the most fashionable thing those days you know!!!!

Legend goes that people of Bengal at that time were sick of repeated invasions, pillaging and general anarchy. So they got Gopala, the most powerful military dude in their kingdom, anointed him as their king. And boy did he rule! He and his successors ruled for the next 400 years. Yes… 4 centuries in all!

This was their empire at the peak of their power. Purely in terms of square kilometers, it exceeds even the Mughal Empire at its peak. Go figure….

Pala’s other achievements again had something to do with the Nalanda university. In those days, what would a king do if he captured a territory? His intentions would most probably be to rape, loot, pillage, plunder, destroy and disfigure, not necessarily in that order. And what did King Dhanapal do when he captured Nalanda? He adopted it and took it to even greater heights. And then figured one university was probably not enough. So he established the Vikaramashila University as well. These two universities are even today universally acknowledged to be the greatest universities ever in Indian History. One flourished under the Palas, and the other was established by them. And as a footnote, the entire region of Tibet adopted Buddhism because of this guy’s efforts. So the Dalai Lama, in some way, has to thank the Palas for his influence today.

So ruling almost the entire Indian Sub-continent (From Afghanistan to Myanmar), establishing not one but two of the greatest Universities of those times guarantees  you a place in the annals of history as a magnificent king. But then the Palas did not stop at that. They then went on to build the biggest ever Buddhist Vihara or monastery, ever. The Somapura Mahavira consisted of 177 cells for the monks to live with a magnificent stupa in the middle. The entire campus occupied about 30 acres and rivaled the Pyramids for its opulence, but with a fundamental difference. The Somapura Mahavira was actually useful. In those times you couldn’t have been a great Buddhist monk if you hadn’t been to Somapura.

Kicks ass…doesn’t it

Apparently, an archeologist named J.C.French wanted to excavate the site of Somapura, but was refused citing lack of funds. Pretty much the story of the shortchanging of this great empire by our history. They deserve more than the 7 lines they get in our history textbook.

OR

The Chalukyas

Remember the King Harsha you met two paragraphs ago where I told you that he had a battlefield win loss ratio of 299-1? Well,  The Chalukyas were responsible for that ‘one’ is his loss column.

And amongst many other things like inspiring the architecture that you have seen in Hampi, establishing and propagating the Kannada language, they also were the first ones in the world to legalize prostitution.

Poor souls don’t even get a mention in the text book.

Similarly

The Pallavas

You all know Chalukyas defeated the undefeated king Harsha right. But then shortly afterward,  Pallavas gave a bloody nose to the same empire which had defeated the then undefeated king. Pallavas ruled over the Chalukyas and most of India south of the Narmada for about 150 years.

They single-handedly built the rock-cut temple complex in Mahabalipuram. It is rumoured that half the temples are actually under the sea, so the Mahabalipuram complex is actually way more impressive than what is visible.

And it is in the Pallava kingdom, you have the genesis of the south-asian script or ‘Pallava Grantha’. Whenever and wherever you read Tamil or see it’s alphabets, remember that it had its origins in the Pallava Grantha. Here is a list of all the languages that owe its existence to the Pallava kingdom as their scripts have their root in this grantha

Tamil Telugu Malayalam Tulu Sinhalese Malay Bahasa Indonesia Thai

And how many pages does the great Pallava dynasty get in our textbook… u guessed it… ZERO.

and Finally

The Cholas

In a speaking convention, the best speaker is always reserved for the last. In a farwell party for your seniors, the most popular guy is always honoured last. So I am mentioning the most important empire in Pre-Islmic Indian history, which also happens to be the most shortchanged, The Cholas, Last.

Just to give you an idea, the Chola empire, if it existed today would have spanned

India Sri Lanka Bangladesh Myanmar Thailand Malaysia Indonesia Vietnam Singapore Maldives

Still not able to visualize the expanse of the Chola Empire, Let me help you

Clearly, Cholas did not know what the word small meant.

Cholas were one of the earliest empires in Indian history, with some estimates dating them back to almost 300 B.C. They are even mentioned by Emperor Ashoka in his pillars,  as a friendly empire in the south. Their recorded downfall is in the 1250′s. In pre-medieval India’s highly fluid power equations, the Chola empire was the one and perhaps the only constant.

The good stuff about the Cholas first. I am sure all of you must have heard of the beautiful and the grand temples all over Tamil Nadu. It was the Cholas who added the adjective grand before the temples. The kind of made it a fashion statement to build big temples, covered with intricate carvings, a trend which was essentially followed by his successors transcending empires.

Ever heard of the Brihadeeshwara Temple in Tanjore. It was built by Raja Raja Chola in the 11th century. Let me tell you some quick facts about this place of worship

The Shivling in this temple is the largest of its kind,  in the world. The Nandi outside, is, again, the largest in the world. The base of the temple is supposed to be so big, that the shadow of its massive ‘gopuram’ actually does not fall on the ground. The top of the ‘gopuram’ consists of a single granite stone weighing approximately 82 tonnes (82,000 Kgs for those weak in metrics). Now, this being 11th century AD, it was a problem getting that big piece of rock to a height of  63 Metres. So what did the Cholas do? Unsurprisingly they built the world’s largest transport ramp, using some kick-ass trigonometry, which stretched all the way to about 20 Kms, all the way inclining towards the top, which basically allowed the elephants to push the rock all the way up. Once on top, they sent masons to do some intricate carvings on that stone, as if somebody would notice at that height.

No wonder it is called ‘Big’ Temple

Any emperor or empire will consider this piece of art to be the peak of their artistic prowess which will be talked about for generations to come. But Cholas being the Cholas,  weren’t satisfied. Raja Raja’s son Rajendra went on to build an exact replica of this temple at a place called Gangai Konda Cholapuram, near the modern town of Chidambaram.

Two big temples, takes quite a beating doesn’t it. Sadly the second temple is not even mentioned in the history books, anywhere. None outside Tamil Nadu even know about its existence, even today.

And also did I tell you, the Cholas were the first in the world to build a fully functional water diversion/water regulation system in the world. Chola king Karikalan built this 329 feet stone dam over the river Kaveri and a network of canals, in 1st century AD, for water storage and irrigation. So when most of the western world was still eating raw animal flesh, Cholas were building dams, navigable canals and were irrigating 10,00,000 (1 Million) hectares of land in their kingdom.

And before I forget, the system they built is in use even today!!!

I don’t have to tell you whether our historians bothered to mention this thing in our textbook.

In case you think Cholas were your peace loving, violence shying role model Emperors, let me move on to some of  their badass stuff

Cholas pioneered in the 6th century what we today know as the Navy. Use of ships for fighting battles existed, Battle of Salamis was probably the first naval engagement ever recorded, but Cholas took Naval warfare to an entirely new level. They probably were the first ones to make their Navy a totally independent service with its own powers and not the extension of the army as was the norm then. They also were the first to pioneer the concept of building exclusive fighting ships and the first to implement the idea of fleets.

Their ship building program was instituted and ships were designed and built for different purposes. Trap ships (They called themselves ‘Kannis’ which means a ‘virgin’ in Tamil. They even had a sense of humour) to lure the enemies into traps, destroyers to do what their name suggests, supply ships etc were the some of the different types of Chola Naval vessels. Cholas also were one of the first to evolve strategic naval doctrines, advanced ship formations and naval warfare tactics.  They were the first ones to start operating ships in fleets. The smallest fleet in the Chola navy consisted of about 12 ships and the largest went up to 500 or more vessels.

In three words, They kicked ass…

And to match their tactical nous, they augmented their vessels with the then state of the art weaponry, both indigenous and imported from China. Their ships were equipped with catapults and probably the first ship-based flamethrowers. Chola navies were routinely known to annihilate enemies five times their number. The Chola navy, in one line, could be described as

Awesome tactics+Brilliant Ships+Latest Weaponry= Bad news for the enemy

This combination enabled Cholas, to practice the first ever recorded instance of what is today called ‘Gunboat Diplomacy’. Sri Vijaya empire, ruling Cambodia, had the guts to actually sack a Chola Merchant convoy. Cholas responded by taking two fleets of about 500 ships each and obliterating the Sri Vijaya kingdom out of existence.  The neighboring  king of Kambujadesa, terrified of what happened to his colleague, basically folded his hands, bowed his head and sent an ornamental chariot to appease the Cholas and declared them as his rulers. And Cholas didn’t even have to fire a single shot.

It is also believed by some sources, that Cholas because of a navigational error, landed in Sri Lanka by mistake. And just for fun, they went on to capture the entire country. There is no actual proof of this but knowing the Cholas, this is quite possible.

At their peak Chola ships consisted of about 1000-1500 battle ships divided into 4 fleets placed in strategic locations like Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Kaveripoompatinam in Tamil Nadu also known as Poompuhar. They were so powerful that the Chinese actually requested Cholas to stop the rampant piracy in the straits of Malacca. They even merited mentions in dispatches in faraway Greece for their naval expertise.

And they were no mugs on the land either. Recall the Gangai Konda Cholapuram temple built by Rajaendra Cholan? It literally means ‘Subduing of the river Ganges’. He built the city in honour of his march upto the Ganges river.  A south Indian empire stretching from the River Kaveri in the south all the way up to the River Ganga in the North deserves much better treatment in our history books. As one of my friend’s said, if the Cholas had been born in America, DC or Marvel comics would have transformed them into super-heroes with a body of adamantium. Because they were born in India, they get about a quarter page in the text-book.

There were in all a total of 16 Chola kings in the Chola Empire. For all of you who actually read that chapter, you will find only the names of two (Raja Raja Chola and Rajendra Chola) have been mentioned. And all the other kings and important details of their empire have been completely eliminated.

There were other empires too at that time who find next to no mention or even worse no mention at all in our History textbooks. The Rashtrakutas ruling what today will be Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra were singularly responsible for three of the top four tourist destinations in the state of Maharashtra today. I am talking about the Ajanta, Ellora and the Elephanta Caves. A Special mention to the Kailas temple in Ellora which is the world’s largest temple cut out of a single piece of rock.

This whole thing was built out of one single piece of rock!!!

Same was the case with the Yadavas, who built the fort of Devagiri or Daulatabad, made famous later by the idiot Mohammad Bin Tughlaq. You know why he specifically chose Devgiri to move his capital?

It is the only fort in recorded history that hasn’t yet fallen in an open battle. It was captured by Alaudiin Khilji through deceit and bribery, but was not won in a fight. Who built it..The Yadavs? Are they mentioned in the History textbook? If you said ‘No’, You got the answer right.

I am not against the lessons on the Islamic empire and their conquests, brutal as they may have been. They are a part of our history. But my question is, aren’t these emperors and their empires a part of our history too? Haven’t these empires contributed to our way of life, our values and principles more than the Islamic kings have ever done? And by eliminating these kingdoms from our history, aren’t you depriving our generation of this great knowledge?

And by this wholesale deletion, aren’t you mutilating history?

For all of you who have developed a sudden interest in the History of India, I will suggest this mind blowing book. Please buy it, the author deserves it.

Why Choose the Vedic Dharma (Why I Chose Vedic Dharma)

From: Agniveer < >

Namaste

(Note – Some lines in italics and parenthesis are added by Skanda987.)

Please read the latest part of the path-breaking series that brought several Muslims, Christians and Hindus into the Vedic fold. Please read, circulate and promote Vedas – only option for a universal religion.

http://agniveer.com/why-i-love-vedas-part-2/

“Excerpt:

You cannot become Muslim and Christian at same time because Islam says God has no son, and Christianity says God has no prophets. And both say that unless you believe in their respective faith alone, you will burn in Hell. So it becomes a game of toss. It is like having two pistols over face. Heads – Islamic Allah shoots you. Tails – Christian God shoots you. And you don’t know which pistol is empty.

But Vedas simply have one agenda for all humans – “Be Humans” (Manurbhava) (Note – The Vedic dharma, however, is not atheist humanism. It is universal religion for mankind. – Skanda987) So technically there is no compulsory specific verse to agree to, when one resolves to follow Vedas. You just need to resolve to be honest and humane (and seeker of the truth, especially the spiritual truth. A Vedic strives to live by these Vedic truths. – Skanda987.)

17. Because Vedas ask us to be tolerant of others (but not the intolerant persons) just as we tolerate our own weaknesses.

So even if we differ from others in views, Vedas urge us to strive for unity and brotherhood. Vedas say that in world there would always be a variety of languages, customs, social norms, ideologies and cultures. But we should seek unity despite that on basis of the divinity that powers all living beings.

Many cults claim to have monopoly over truth and have punishments for those who refuse to believe in these claims of truth. As per Vedas, these are ways of insane. Because no law will force you to follow the law. E=mc2 is law of relativity. But Einstein’s research does not say that if you don’t believe in this formula, you will be killed. Law will simply hold true irrespective of whether one believes or not. So instead of issuing a fatwa on E=mc2, sensible scientists would try to teach relativity to deserving students so that they understand themselves and even question or improve upon the law with a better version. And if there is a genius, he can even reject the law in favor of something more complete. This is the way of Vedas.

18. Because God of Vedas does not sit on a chair on top of the sky.

Since earth is round in Vedas, this concept of 4th or 7th sky or top of sky is irrelevant as per Vedas. Instead God of Vedas refers to the source that empowers all living beings and ensures that they interact with material world as per unchangeable laws. God of Vedas does not twist its laws or show miracles or get angry or sleep or keep an army or court of angels and prophets or grant special favors to anyone. God of Vedas is present everywhere, within and outside us, unchangeable, undying, unborn, impersonal and a consistent law-keeper.

In fact the (the concept of God as) Ishwar or Paramatma of Vedas is a completely different entity from the (the concept of) God in other later era religious books. The similar usage of words is a cause of confusion. Being so, all religions are not same.

19. Because earth moves round the sun in (per the) Vedas

unlike many medieval texts. Earth is not flat in Vedas. Moving a metal wire between magnetic poles generate electricity in Vedas. Gravitational and electrical forces follow inverse square law in Vedas. Orbits of planets are elliptical in Vedas. Binary logic can lead to advanced automated calculation mechanisms as per Vedas.

I am yet to see a religious book apart from Vedic university that is so scientific. All I know is that till recent, some religious cults punished belief in these scientific facts as blasphemy.

But Vedas clearly encourage such blasphemy and going against the trend.

20. Because there is no death sentence for insulting Vedas or any Vedic role model.

Idol worshipers are okay per the Vedas. They, however, are considered worst of creatures by certain cults that harbor terrorism. The Vedas do not consider them stone worshipers.

21. Because all religions have complete freedom to propagate their faiths, but without threats as per Vedas (No one has right to force religion on others. –Skanda987)

Vedas say: Hindu, Muslim, Christian – I don’t care. Simply Be Human (the know the spiritual science as is provided in the Vedas and live accordingly.)

22. Because Vedas ask us to destroy those fanatics who nurture hatred against those who do not follow their faiths.

Anyone who believes that non-believers must be discriminated in any manner is a potential enemy of humanity. Such elements must be purged out of society (or such intolerant ideology must be purged out of the nation, especially the Vedic nation) so that pluralism (as described by the Vedas) is protected.

23. Because Vedas are against polygamy. One man – one woman is the way of Vedas.

The belief that polygamy is divine right of man is “sick” as per Vedas. It is at best a social evil that must be completely eliminated.

24. Because Vedas are against divorcing wife simply by uttering or speaking a word three times.

There can be no difference in marital rights of man and woman as per Vedas. Husband cannot beat the wife. No one can keep concubines or slaves. Property rights are same for both genders. Child marriage is wrong as per Vedas. Widow remarriage is encouraged.

25. Because women in Vedas are free to be doctors, engineers, artists, businesswomen, soldiers, politicians, state-heads, priests, teachers or drivers.

There are no divine prohibitions on career paths of women.

26. Because women in Vedas need not damage their bodies due to lack of Vitamin D caused by staying indoors and covering themselves totally in curtains.

They are free to choose any sensible decent dress without jeopardizing their freedom, health and comfort or requiring approval from some religious agent.

27. Because punishment for rape is death sentence as per Vedas, irrespective of age of culprit.

No illiterate Mohd. Afroz (main accused of Delhi rape case) can go scot-free after raping and murdering a Damini just because his fake school record claims him to be 5 months less than 18 years during his ghastly crime.

28. Because Vedas form foundations of marvelous texts like Bhagvad Gita, Yog Darshan and Upanishads.

Of all the books I have ever read, nothing matches these classics in inspiration, insights, purpose and value-enhancement.

29. Because recitation of Vedic mantras can bring psychological and physiological healing.

Vedic mantras are extremely powerful rejuvenation pills.

30. Because Vedas urge us to live in harmony with nature.

The concept of Vedas is to give as much back to world as much you take it. By our mere existence, we pollute the world. Hence it becomes a supreme duty to take proactive efforts for protecting the environment. Vedas are the first and most vocal advocates of green-technology and “Save Environment” mission. (None of the Vedic practice causes environmental harm to the planet. –Skanda987)

31. Because I cannot be a Christian if I refuse to believe in Jesus. Because I cannot be a Muslim if I refuse to believe in Prophets.

In fact irrespective of my good deeds, I would be forever punished by God for my refusal to believe. Forget God, even in this world, I may be beheaded for blasphemy. If I escape official punishment because of secular laws in that country, still I may be killed by some fanatic. And then that fanatic would be hailed as ‘great’ for killing an ‘enemy’ of religion.

The only option for a rational spiritual person is Vedas – no threats, no punishments, no mandatory beliefs checklist. Only universalism and freedom to have a customized philosophy of life.

32. Because there is no conversion agenda in Vedas.

The Pope says that he aspires all people in world to become Christians. All Christian missionaries indulge in social activities with this open agenda. Zakir Naik says that a Muslim cannot get into Heaven until he has converted other people in Islam. These agents of these medieval religions want to divide world in believers and non-believers and want to reduce population of non-believers – through deceit, war, terror or bribe. They demand hatred against non-believers. Look at all the top terrorists of the world. All have a very clear agenda of destroying non-believers.

Pope says that when one becomes Christian, he must agree that Jesus is the only begotten son of God and performs all miracles including salvation.

Zakir Naik says that when one becomes Muslim, he must agree that There is no Allah but Allah, and Muhammad is his last and only reliable prophet.

So you must believe in things you have never seen, nor anyone you know has ever seen, nor is validated by scientific research.

But Vedas simply have one agenda for all humans – “Be Humans” (Manurbhava). So technically there is no compulsory specific verse to agree to, when one resolves to follow Vedas. You just need to resolve to be honest and humane.

However a few popular verses are recited by many to showcase their allegiance to Vedas. Just read what these verses ask one to promise:

Gayatri Mantra – I resolve to direct all my thoughts to the source of empowerment and enlightenment of all living beings to best of my capabilities.

Shuddhi Mantras – I resolve to purify my mind of all forms of negative thinking, hatred, helplessness, lust, greed and strive to live a life that benefits everyone in society. I shall not discriminate on basis of beliefs, wealth, power, education when serving the society. My life is dedicated to a selfless honest service of entire world with pure heart. If I ever even thought of anything with ill intentions towards anyone in world, I humbly apologize and resolve to never do so again.

Just see why Vedas alone form foundations of a universal humane rational philosophy of life. Old is Gold! Oldest is Best!

Vedas demand us to love all, not discriminate, be tolerant of differences with others, fight against those who promote hatred on basis of theological beliefs and work for unity of all peace loving people irrespective of religion.

Nothing except Vedas are so timeless, region-less, religion-less and yet purpose oriented. One can continue the list for “Why I love Vedas!” forever.

The essence is that the only foundation for a universal religion for modern human civilization lies in Vedas – the original source.

It is the only recipe we have to unite the world. (Vedic dharma causes peace to all.)

Let us bring Vedas to every doorstep. Let us bring Vedas to every human.

Lets get Ahead to Vedas!

Muslims demand Separate Malabar State (Islam and peace cannot co-exist)

Muslims demand Separate Malabar State.

Dr. Babu Suseelan.

Muslims  League is a party to current Government in Kerala. At present,  Kerala  government is administered by Converted Muslims and Christians. Hindus are only 56.6 percent  percent of the population. Out of the 56.6 percent of Hindus, the majority are Marxists and pseudo secularists. The Marxist Government under E.M.S. Namappothripadu has given Mallappuram to Muslims. Muslims have kicked out all infidel Hindus or beheaded all Sanathanavadis from Mallappuram. It seems that the secular media and Kerala Hindus have nothing to say about the demographic changes taking place in Kerala and the demand by Jihadis to have a separate Malabar state with Muslim majority. Hindus in Kerala, have excuses for doing nothing to prevent coercive religious conversion or Jihadi terrorism.

Granted, there are no psychiatric diagnostic categories for laziness, immaturity, tolerance, cowardice, compromise, selfishness and downright stupidity.  Even if there were, it wouldn’t matter because no one bothers to consider them anymore.

Converted Muslims and Christians claim that they are discriminated and development is not taking place in Malabar.  In this age of victim, nothing is anybody’s fault.  All the personality and behavioral traits of Muslims acquired through by Miseducation at Islamic schools and the dangerous identities with Saudi Arabian desert culture have been swept clean away by Muslims and the pseudo-secular media.  Aided and abetted by a torrent of apologetic, pseudo secular  Hindus and Marxist miscreants, Jihadis of Malabar insist on rationalizing  their self destructive behavior.

There appears to be a popular belief among converted Christians and Mohammedans  of India that since Hindus are in a majority they cannot be  allowed to form the government. It is believed by Mohammedans and converted Christians that Hindus are the most irrational,  tolerant people on earth. Hindu behavior is unacceptable to evangelical Christians and Mohammedans and they should be slaughtered, subjugated and oppressed and ruled by Christians and Islamic terrorists.

This willful blindness towards the essence of Islamic terrorism and conversion of innocent, gullible Hindus will result in India being dismantled into tiny states. Willful ignorance of  Jihadi terrorism, Love-Jihad, Al-Taquiea, conversion and alien rule will continuously harm our nation. The result of this stunningly  unlawful rule of India by the anti-Hindu government and the criminal politicians had harmed Hindus and India. The corrosive power of the Sonia government should be stopped by all means. How? Hindus should organize and elect pro-Hindu government.  This willful blindness of subversion, oppression, terrorism, coercive conversion will  put our children in dangerous situations.

Willful blindness, conscious avoidance, and deliberate ignorance, denial, apathy, and indifference had harmed Hindus and India. The principle of democracy, justice and fairness require Hindus to register for voting. India, however is a democracy  But Muslims don’t believe in democracy. For Mohammedans, their Saudi Arabian dictates are supreme. Indian  Hindus believes in fairness, justice, and equality. But non-participation in election functions just the opposite way.

India’s imperialistic constitution written by the British protect converted Christians and Mohammedans. The majority Hindus appease and favor  atrocious and brutal rule. The western christian governments and Islamic nations refused to divide their country,  provide special status for minorities . In India  one third of the territory was given away  to the brutal Mohammedans . It is time for the majority Hindus to participate in election and support the national leader Modi. If Hindus are unwilling to kick out tyrants and traitors India and Hindus will be doomed.

For improvements to happen, our weakness need to be told again and again . The ultimate stupidity is withholding from Hindus the respect they deserve.

Bottom Line: If Hindus want a Hindu Rashtra and higher self-esteem, there’s is only one, admittedly old fashioned, way to get it. How?  Declare India as a Hindu Rashtra. And be active with Politics and participate in election and elect Sri Narendra Modi as the Prime Minster of India.

Hindu History
Holocaust of Hindus
During the Muslim Occupation of India
by Sudheer Birodkar

___________________________________________________________________

“The massacres perpetuated by Muslims in India are unparalleled in history, bigger than the Holocaust of the Jews by the Nazis; or the massacre of the Armenians by the Turks; more extensive even than the slaughter of the South American native populations by the invading Spanish and Portuguese.”   – Francois Gautier
___________________________________________________________________

This page is dedicated to the memory of those men, women and children who were killed or were captured or converted by force to Islam over a period of fourteen centuries in India and in other parts of the globe. These men, women and children cannot be recalled for standing witness to what was done to them by the swordsmen of Islam.

Hence we are going to rely on Muslim historians, in India and abroad, who have written hundreds of glowing accounts of the devastation caused by the progress of Islamic armies across the world (and in India). As our focus is India, we are going to look only at what happened in India during the Islamic invasion and the following struggle for independence from Islamic rule that was waged by the Hindus. A pronounced feature of these Muslim histories is a description – in smaller or greater detail but always with considerable pride – of how the Hindus were slaughtered en masse or converted by force, how hundreds of thousands of Hindu men and women and children were captured as booty and sold into slavery, how Hindu temples and monasteries were razed to the ground or burnt down, and how images of Hindu Gods and Goddesses were destroyed or desecrated.

Commandments of Allah (Quran) and precedents set by the Prophet (Sunnah) are frequently cited by the authors in support of what the swordsmen and demolition squads of Islam did with extraordinary zeal, not only in the midst of war but also, and more thoroughly, after Islamic rule had been firmly established.

Almost all medieval Muslim historians credit their heroes with desecration of Hindu idols and/or destruction of Hindu temples. The picture that emerges has the following components, depending upon whether the iconoclast was in a hurry on account of Hindu resistance or did his work at leisure after a decisive victory:

1. The idols were mutilated or smashed or burnt or melted down if they were made of precious metals;

2. Sculptures in relief on walls and pillars were disfigured or scraped away or torn down;

3. Idols of stone and inferior metals or their pieces were taken away, sometimes by cartloads, to be thrown down before the main mosque in

(a) the metropolis of the ruling Muslim sultan, and

(b) The holy cities of Islam, particularly Mecca, Medina and Baghdad;

4. There were instances of idols being turned into lavatory seats or handed over to butchers to be used as weights while selling meat;

5. Brahmin priests and other holy men in and around the temple were molested or murdered;

6. Sacred vessels and scriptures used in worship were defiled and scattered or burnt:

7. Temples were damaged or despoiled or demolished or burnt down or converted into mosques with some structural alterations or entire mosques were raised on the same sites mostly with temple materials;

8. Cows were slaughtered on the temple sites so that Hindus could not use them again.

This essay is to enable us to remember the sacrifice of those who attained Veergati (Martyrdom) when faced against these forces of darkness that represented religious bigotry that traumatized and tormented India and other parts of our globe for Fourteen Hundred years. India has survived as a wounded civilization to tell the story of this chilling horror. A horror that seems too cruel to be true. The unfortunate part is that it was true and this would become true once more in the future, if the forces of malevolence again get the upper hand in India or in any part of the world.

This essay has been compiled from the writings of a cross section of Historians comprising Sir Jadunath Sarkar , Rizwan Salim, Sita Ram Goel, Ram Swarup, Arun Shourie, R.C. Mazumdar and a few others.

Epigraphic Evidence of the Construction of Masjids by destroying Hindu temples

There are many mosques all over India which are known to local tradition and the Archaeological Survey of India as built on the site of and, quite frequently, from the materials of, demolished Hindu temples. Most of them carry inscriptions invoking Allah and the Prophet, quoting the Quran and giving details of when, how and by whom they were constructed. The inscriptions have been deciphered and connected to their historical context by learned Muslim calligraphers. They have been published by the Archaeological Survey of India in its Epigraphica Indica Arabic and Persian Supplement.

The following few inscriptions have been selected in order to show that:

(1) destruction of Hindu temples continued throughout the period of Muslim domination;

(2) it covered all parts of India – east, west, north, and south; and

(3) all Muslim dynasties, imperial and provincial, participated in the “pious performance”.

1. Qu’wat al-Islam Masjid, Qutub Minar, Delhi:

“This fort was conquered and the Jami Masjid built in the year 587 A.H (Hejira Era) by the  Amir Qutub-ud-din Aibak the slave of the Sultan, Shahabuddin Ghori. According to the Epigraphica Indica Arabic and Persian Supplement (1909-10, pp.3-4): “The materials of 27 idol temples, on each of which 2,000,000 Delhiwals had been spent were used in the (construction of) the mosque…” The year 587 H. corresponds to 1192 A.D. “Delhiwal was a high-denomination coin current at that time in Delhi.

2. Masjid at Manvi in the Raichur District of Karnataka by Firuz Shah Bahmani:

“Praise be to Allah that by the decree of the Parvardigar, a mosque has been converted out of a temple as a Sign of religion in the reign of…the Sultan who is the asylum of Faith Firuz Shah Bahmani who is the cause of exuberant spring in the garden of religion” (1962, pp.56-57). The inscription mentions the year 1406-07 A.D. as the time of construction.

3. Jami Masjid at Malan, Palanpur Taluka, Banaskantha District of Gujarat by Khan-i-Azam Ulugh Khan:

“The Jami Masjid was built by Khan-i-Azam Ulugh Khan…who suppressed the wretched infidels. He eradicated the idolatrous houses and mine of infidelity, along with the idols…with the edge of the sword, and made ready this edifice… he made its walls and doors out of the idols; the back of every stone became the place for prostration of the believer” (1963, pp.26-29). The date of construction is mentioned as 1462 A.D. in the reign of Mahmud Shah I (Begada) of Gujarat.

4. Hammam Darwaza Masjid at Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh in the reign of Akbar, the Great Mughal:

“Thanks that by the guidance of the everlasting and living (Allah), this house of infidelity became the niche of prayer. As a reward for that, the Generous Lord constructed an abode for the builder in paradise” (1969, P 375). Its chronogram yields the year 1567 A.D. in the reign Akbar, the Great Mughal.

A local historian, Fasih-ud-Din, tells us that the temple had been built earlier by Diwan Chaman Das, an official of the Mughal Government.

5. Jami Masjid at Ghoda in the Poona District of  Maharashtra by Mir Muhammad Zaman:

“O Allah! O Muhammad! O Ali! When Mir Muhammad Zaman made up his mind, he opened the door of prosperity on himself by his own hand. He demolished thirty three idol temples (and) by divine grace laid the foundation of a building in this abode of perdition” (1933-34, p.24). The inscription is dated 1586 A.D. when the Poona region was ruled by the Nizam Shahi sultans of Ahmadnagar.

6. Gachinala Masjid at Cumbum in the Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh by Muhammad Shah:

“He is Allah, may he be glorified…During the august rule of…Muhammad Shah, there was a well-established idol-house in Kuhmum…Muhammad Salih who prospers in the rectitude of the affairs of the Faith…razed to the ground, the edifice of the idol-house and broke the idols in a manly fashion. He constructed on its site a suitable mosque, towering above the buildings of all” (1959-60, pp.64-66). The date of construction is mentioned as 1729-30 A.D. in the reign of the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah.

Though sites of demolished Hindu temples were mostly used for building mosques and Idgahs; temple materials were often used in other Muslim monuments as well. Archaeologists have discovered such materials, architectural as well as sculptural, in quite a few forts, palaces, maqbaras, Sufi khanqahs, madrasas, etc.

In Srinagar, Kashmir, temple materials can be seen in long stretches of the stone embankments on both sides of the Jhelum.

The inscriptions on the walls of the Gopi Talav, a stepped well at Surat, tell us that the well was constructed by Haidar Quli, the Mughal governor of Gujarat, in 1718 A.D. in the reign of Farrukh Siyar. One of them says that its bricks were taken from an idol temple”. The other informs us that Hiaider Quli Khan, during whose period tyranny has become extinct, laid waste several idol temples in order to make this strong building firm…” (1933-34. pp.37-44).

THE TEMPLE OF KHANDOBA AT JEJURI
This was one of the many temples that had been destroyed and converted into a Mosque by the Muslim aggressors.

Shivaji Maharaj reconverted it into a temple. Even today, the temple structure displays a mix of Hindu and Muslim architecture. But in spite of the trying circumstances of religious bigotry of the Muslim aggressors in which he operated, Shivaji Maharaj never disrespected the Muslim faith. Whenever a copy of the holy Koran fell into the hands of Maratha troops, Shivaji Maharaj had given strict instructions to treat it with utmost respect and hand it over to the local Maulavis (Muslim priests).

Literary Evidence

Literary evidence of Islamic iconoclasm vis-a-vis Hindu places of worship is far more extensive. It covers a 1onger span of time, from the fifth decade of the 7th century to the closing years of the eighteenth. It also embraces a larger space, from Transoxiana in the north to Tamil Nadu in the south, and from Afghanistan the west to Assam in the east.

Deception practiced by some Historians

Pseudo-secularist “historians” and Muslim apologists would have us believe that medieval Muslim annalists were indulging in poetic exaggerations in order to please their pious patrons. But archaeological explorations in modern times have, however, provided physical proofs of literary descriptions.

The vast cradle of Hindu culture is literally littered with ruins of temples and monasteries belonging to all sects of Sanatana Dharma- Buddhist, Jain, Saiva, Sakta, Vaishnava and the rest.

The literary sources, like the epigraphic, provide evidence of the elation which Muslims felt while witnessing or narrating these “pious deeds”. A few citations from Amir Khusro will illustrate the point. The instances cited relate to the doings of Jalalud-Din Firuz Khilji, Alaud-Din Khilji and the latter’s military commanders. Khusro served as a court-poet of six successive sultans at Delhi and wrote a masnavi in praise of each after he had murdered his predecessor. Khusro was the dearest disciple of Shaikh Nizamud-Din Awliya and has come to be honoured as a great sufi himself.

In our own times, Khusro is being hailed as the father of a composite Hindu-Muslim culture and the pioneer of secularism. Dr. R.C. Majumdar, whom the Pseudo-secularists malign as a “communalist historian” names him as a “liberal Muslim’.

Here is what Amir Khusro has written:

1. Jhain: “Next morning he (Jalal-ud-din went again to the temples and ordered their destruction … While the soldiers sought every opportunity of plundering, the Shah was engaged in burning the temples and destroying the idols. There were two bronze idols of Brahma, each of which weighed more than a thousand mans (a measure of weight). These were broken into pieces and the fragments were distributed among the officers with orders to throw them down at the gates of the Masjid on their return (to Delhi)” (Miftab-ul-Futub)

2. Devagiri: “He (Ala-ud-Din) destroyed the temples of the idolaters and erected pulpits and arches for mosques” (ibid).

3. Somanath: “They made the temple prostrate itself towards the Kaaba. You may say that the temple first offered its prayers and then had a bath (i.e. the temple was made to topple and fall into the sea)…He (Ulugh Khan) destroyed all the idols and temples, but sent one idol, the biggest of all idols, to the court of his Godlike Majesty and on that account in that ancient stronghold of idolatry, the summons to prayers (Azzan)was proclaimed so loudly that they heard it in Misr (Egypt) and Madain (Iraq)” (Tarikh-i-Alai).

4. Delhi: “He (Ala-ud-Din) ordered the circumference of the new minar to be made double of the old one (Qutub Minar)… The stones were dug out from the hills and the temples of the infidels were demolished to furnish a supply” (Ibid).

5. Ranthambhor: “This strong fort was taken by the slaughter of the stinking Rai. Jhain was also captured, an iron fort, an ancient abode of idolatry, and a new city of the people of the (muslim) faith arose. The temple of Bahir (Bhairava) Deo and temples of other gods, were all razed to the ground” (lbid).

6. Brahmastpuri (Chidambaram): “Here he (Malik Kafur) heard that in Brahmastpuri there was a golden idol … he then determined on razing the temple to the ground ..lt was the holy place of the Hindus which Malik dug up from its foundations with the greatest care. And the heads of Brahmans and idolaters danced from their necks and fell to the ground at their feet, and blood flowed in torrents.

The stone idols called Ling Mahadeo which had been established a long time at the place and on which the women of the infidels (Hindus) rubbed their vaginas for (sexual) satisfaction. (Mark the extent of the derogatory tone of the Islamic Saint Amir Khusro – Author). These, up to this time, the kick of the horse of Islam had not attempted to break. The Musalmans destroyed all the lingas, and Deo Narain fell down.

The Kutub Minar built by Kutub-ud-din Aibak. The Kutub Minar is one of the earliest Islamic monuments in India. This Minar was built from the columns of destroyed Hindu and Jain temples. It stands at the site of Pithoragarh which was the capital of Prithiviraj Chauhan, the last Hindu ruler of Delhi. The damaged motifs in this picture show clear Hindu origins – a testimony to the vandalism of the Muslim aggressors. There are many such temples which had been converted into mosques like the Bhoja Shala Mosque, the Gyan Vyapi Mosque, the Krishna Janmabhoomi Idgah, apart from the now liberated Ramjanmabhoomi at Ayodhya. The total runs to 3000 (Three Thousand).  In the opinion of the author, all such controversial structures should be taken possession of by a national educational trust and be converted into schools for humanist and rationalist education. This could be the first step in the long journey for converting all places of religious worship all over the globe into schools for humanist and rationalist education where humans can finally be taught the futility of worshipping human ignorance termed as God and the stupidity of fighting each other due to the different names we have given to human ignorance.

What Hiuen Tsang had seen in pre-Islamic India

Some historians say that the Hindu temples in North India had been destroyed not by the Muslim invaders but by the White Huns who had invaded India in the 5th century, i.e. 500 years before the first Muslims set their foot in north India in the 10th century.

Hiuen Tsang, a Buddhist pilgrim, who came from China, after the invasion of the White Huns, found many monasteries in pre-Islamic India. He said they were in a splendid state. In his days the White Huns had invaded north India and had even established their rule over Kashmir where Hiuen Tsang saw 500 monasteries housing 5,000 monks It is, therefore, difficult to hold them responsible for the disappearance of Buddhist centres in areas where Hiuen Tsang had found them flourishing.

An explanation has to be found elsewhere. In any case, the upheaval the White Huns caused was over by the middle of the sixth century. Moreover, the temples and monasteries which Hiuen Tsang saw were only a few out of many. He had not gone into the interior of any province, having confined himself to the more famous Buddhist centres.

What Really Happened to Hindu Temples

So what was it that really happened to thousands upon thousands of temples and monasteries? Why did they disappear and/or give place to another type of monuments? How come that their architectural and sculptural fragments got built into the foundations, doors, walls and domes of the Islamic edifices which replaced them? These are crucial questions which should have been asked by students of medieval Indian history.

But no historian worth his name has raised these questions squarely, not to speak of finding accurate answers to them. No systematic study of the subject has been made. What we have is stray references to the demolition of a few Hindu temples, made by the more daring Hindu historians while discussing the religious policies of this or that sultan.

Sir Jadunath Sarkar and Professor Sri Ram Sharma have given more attention to the Islamic policy of demolishing Hindu temples and pointed an accusing finger at the theological tenets which dictated that policy. But their treatment of the subject is brief and their enumeration of temples destroyed by Aurangzeb and the other Mughal emperors touches only the fringe of a vast holocaust caused by the Theology of Islam all over the cradle of Hindu Culture and throughout more than thirteen hundred years of Muslim occupation of India.

What the Muslim Historians have to Say

Muslim historians, in India and abroad, have written hundreds of accounts in which the progress of Islamic armies across the cradle of Hindu culture is narrated, stage by stage and period by period.

Islamic Iconoclasm Today

A gigantic image of the Great Master – Buddha
at Bamiyan near Kabul in Afghanistan.
It is this image which has been threatened to be blown up by the Taliban, the Islamic militia that rules Afghanistan.  The statue faced its first defilement at the hands of Islamic invaders when they invaded pre-dominantly Buddhist Afghanistan in the 8th century
Incidentally the name Afghanistan is derived from the Sanskrit terms Upa-gana-stan  which means “Lands where the Allied tribes live”.

Islamic Theology supports the Destruction of ALL Non-Muslim Places of Worship

A reference to the Quran and to the Theology of Islam as perfected by the orthodox Imams, leaves little doubt about the violent and aggressive nature of Islam.

Jihad is Allah’s command to the Muslims to destroy the non- Muslims. It is not at all necessary that the non-Muslims need have wronged the Muslims, for them to be attacked by the Muslims. The “crime” that the non-Muslims do not believe in Islam is enough for the Muslims to attack the non-Muslims. Here is what the Quran says:

“I have been commanded by Allah to fight the unbelievers until they believe in Allah and His prophet and follow the laws of Islam. It is only then that the safety of their lives and property may be guaranteed.” (Sahih Tirmzi, Vol. 2: 192)

And why should they persecute and annihilate the non-Muslims? The Koran explains the point:

“God has bought from the believers their selves and their possessions against the gift of paradise; they fight in the way of God; they kill, and are killed; that is a promise; binding on God…. And who fulfills his covenant truer than God? So rejoice in the bargain you have made with Him that is the mighty triumph…” (Repentance: 192)

Jihad, as can be seen, is a covenant between Allah and the Muslims; the former offers paradise to the latter for killing and plundering the non-Muslims without having any moral qualm in return for Paradise. Obviously, according to Islamic theology the massacre of the fellow-beings and the plunder of their possession is an act of great righteousness because it attracts the highest reward – that is, paradise. The Quran justifies booty, the plunder of the infidels in the following words:

“It is not for any prophet to have prisoners, until he make wide slaughter in land…..

Eat of what you have taken as booty, it is lawful and good.” (The Spoils: 65)

Here is the essence of Islamic Jihad: Invade the non-Muslims in the name of Allah for the sheer crime of not believing in Him; first carry out an extensive carnage of the people then all their property including women and children become legally and morally the possessions of the Muslims, who are at liberty to use them as they think fit.

The Physical Evidence – Mutilated Hindu Architecture

The apologists for Islam – the most clogged among them are some Pseudo-secularist historians and politicians – have easily got away with the plea that Muslim court scribes having succumbed to poetic exaggeration in order to please their pious patrons. Their case is weakened when they cite the same sources in support of their speculations or when the question is asked as to why the patron needed stories of bloodshed and wanton destruction for feeding their piety.

There are, however witnesses who are not beyond recall who can confirm that the Muslim court scribes were not at all foisting fables on their readers. These are the hundreds of thousands of sculptural and architectural fragments which stand arrayed in museums and drawing rooms all over the world, or which are awaiting to be picked up by public and private collectors, or which stare at us from numerous Muslim monuments.

These are the thousands of Hindu temples and monasteries which either stand on the surface in a state of ruination or lie buried under the earth waiting for being brought to light by the archaeologist’s spade. These are the thousands of Muslim edifices, religious as well as secular, which occupy the sites of Hindu temples and monasteries and/or which have been constructed from materials of those monuments. All these witnesses carry unimpeachable evidence of the violence that was done to them, deliberately and by malevolent hands.

The Silence of Art Historians regarding the mutilation of Hindu Art, Architecture and Sculpture

So far no one has cared to make these witnesses speak and relate the story of how they got ruined, demolished, dislocated, dismembered, defaced mutilated and burnt. Recent writers on Hindu architecture and sculpture – their tribe is multiplying fast, mostly ffor commercial reasons – ignore the ghastly wounds which these witnesses show at the very first sight, and dwell on the beauties of the limbs that have survived or escaped injury.

Many a time they have to resort to their imagination for supplying what should have been there but is missing. All they seem to care for is building their own reputations as historians of Hindu art. If one draws their attention to the mutilations and disfigurements suffered by the subjects under study, one is met with a stunned silence or denounced downright as a Hindu chauvinist out to raise ‘demons from the past with the deliberate intention of causing communal strife. I, therefore, propose to present only one case out the innumerable of these in order to show in what shape such monuments are and what tale of vandalism they have to tell.

Hindu Monuments of Pre-Islamic Delhi

Archaeological excavations during 1992-95 at Lalkot, a Tomar citadel near Mehrauli before Delhi was occupied by Muhammad Ghori in 1192, have uncovered the following:
– Antiquities in the levels of Period II (Early Sultanate). A number of sculptural and architectural fragments in stone of the Rajput period have been noticed scattered on the surface or found in the levels of Period II, either in the deposits or reused in construction of early Sultanate structures.

They included a Varaha head; amalakas; adhisthana mouldings; pillar bases; parts of sculptured door jambs, one with maithuna figures; moulded and decorated architectural fragments; small sculptures showing Tirthankara, deities, vase etc.; Nandi figure and a lion’s head which can be connected with the story of stone lion figures at the gate of the palaces of Anang Pal II.

The evidence of stone Nandi suggests for the first time the existence of a Shiva temple in the vicinity. The pre-Muslim association of this structural period of early Sultanate age is evidenced by a number of scattered or reused architectural and sculptural stone fragments. Among them the hind part of a figure of Nandi, the Vahana of Lord Shiva, reused in the foundation of wall as a rubble.

India in the Eyes of Pseudo Secular Historians of Our Times

Their interpretation of Indian history recognizes only the economic reality. And although economic reality is an important element of human existence. It is not the only one. Issues like Religious Fanaticism, exist independent of economic factors. These Historians view the Muslim invasions of India purely as raids of bandits out who came to loot the material wealth of India. To loot the temples of Somnath, Thanesar, Mathura, Kanauj, etc. Yes the Muslim invaders did loot the country’s material wealth. But they also destroyed the Nalanda University, and burned down the countless treatises that were stored there. The Muslim invaders converted millions of Hindus to Islam at the point of the Sword, they also massacred millions more and had a practice of making a tower of severed enemy (Hindu) heads in the main square of a town after its conquest. They abducted many Hindu women and held them as concubines in Harems.

This list of crimes against humanity on part of the medieval Muslim invaders could be endless. Now these crimes do not have any economic angle at all. But all the same they were committed and they reflect in clear terms a barbaric and backward attitude. About this there is no doubt. The Pseudo Secular Historians try to mask this reality. And in this they are guilt of hiding facts and distorting history. They write that Mahmud Ghaznavi only destroyed temples to plunder their wealth, not for religious motives: a theory in flagrant contradiction with all the contemporary evidence. Mahmud was a devout Muslim, who copied the Quran “for the benefit of his soul”. He refused the huge ransom which the Hindus offered in return for an idol which he had captured, since he preferred to be an idol breaker rather than an idol-seller”. He destroyed many non-wealthy Hindu temples and left wealthy mosques untouched. He wasted time in non-profit acts of desecration, like hanging a cow’s tongue around an idol’s neck. On such facts, no honest historian would have built the conclusion that Mahmud was led by economical rather that fanatical religious motives.

What Really Happened in India during the Muslim Invasions?

Invaders at a very low level of civilisation and culture worth the name, from Arabia and west Asia, began entering India from the early eighth century onwards. Islamic invaders demolished countless Hindu temples, shattered uncountable sculptures and idols, plundered innumerable palaces and forts of Hindu kings, killed vast numbers of Hindu men and carried off Hindu women. This story, the educated Indians – and a lot of even the illiterate Indians – know very well. Indian History books at School and College do not tell the story in its true detail. Hence many Indians do not seem to recognize that the alien Muslim marauders destroyed the historical evolution of what was a spiritually, philosophically and materially advanced civilisation.

Pre-Islamic Hindu civilization was the most richly imaginative culture, and the most vigorously creative society.

The damaged armless image of the bodyguard of Shiva-Maheshwara as depicted at the Hoysaleshwara Temple complex at Halebid.  Hindu temples built in the ancient times were perfect works of art. The evidence of the ferocity with which the Muslim invaders must have struck at the sculptures of gods and goddesses, and apsaras, kings and queens, dancers and musicians is frightful. At so many ancient temples of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, for example, shattered portions of stone images still lie scattered in the temple courtyards.  Considering the fury used on the idols and sculptures, the stone- breaking axe must have been applied to thousands upon thousands of images of hypnotic beauty. Giving proof of the resentment that men belonging to an inferior civilisation feel upon encountering a superior civilisation of individuals with a more refined culture.

It is clear that India at the time when Muslim invaders turned towards it (8th to 11th century) was a rich region for its religion and culture: and its fine arts and letters and even for its wealth in terms of material sciences, art and architecture, precious and semi-precious stones, gold and silver.

Tenth century India was also too far advanced than its contemporaries in the East and the West for its achievements in the realms of speculative philosophy and scientific theorizing, mathematics and knowledge of nature’s workings. Hindus of the early medieval period were unquestionably superior in more things than the Chinese, the Persians (including the Sassanians), the Romans and the Byzantines of the immediate preceding centuries.

The Finesse of pre-Islamic Hindu Art and Architecture

Medieval India until the Islamic invaders destroyed it, was history’s most richly imaginative culture and one of the world’s most advanced civilisations of those times. Look at the Hindu art that Muslim iconoclasts severely damaged or destroyed. Ancient Hindu sculpture is vigorous and sensual in the highest degree-more fascinating than any other figural art created anywhere else on earth. (Only statues created by classical Greek artists are in the same class as Hindu temple sculpture.)

Ancient Hindu temple architecture is the most awe-inspiring, ornate and spell-binding architectural style. (The Gothic art of cathedrals in Western Europe is the only other religious architecture that is comparable with the intricate architecture of ancient Hindu temples such as those at Khajuraho, Madurai, Dwarka, Kanchipuram, etc.) No artists of any historical civilisation have ever revealed the same genius as ancient India’s artists and artisans.

The Devastation caused by Islamic Iconoclasm

Their minds filled with venom against the idol-worship and the idol-worshippers of India, the Muslims destroyed any Hindu temple that came their way. This is a historical fact, mentioned by Muslim chroniclers and others of the time. When the Muslims faced Hindu resistance and were forced to retreat they merely damaged the Hindu temples they could lay their hands on but the temples remained standing. This is what happened in South India.

But a large number – not hundreds but many thousands – of the ancient Hindu temples in North India were broken into shards of cracked stone. In the ancient cities of Varanasi and Mathura, Ujjain and Maheshwar, Jwalamukhi and Dwaraka, not one temple survives whole and intact from the ancient times. The wrecking of Hindu temples went on from the early years of the 8th century to well past 1700 AD, a period of almost 1000 years. Every Muslim ruler in Delhi (or Governor of Provinces) spent most of his time warring against Hindu kings in the north and the south, the east and the west: and almost every Muslim Sultan and his army commanders indulged in large-scale destructions of Hindu temples and idols.

It is easy to conclude that virtually every Hindu temple built in the ancient times is a perfect work of art.

Considering the fury used on the idols and sculptures, the stone-breaking axe must have been applied to thousands upon thousands of images of hypnotic beauty. Giving proof of the resentment that men belonging to an inferior civilisation feel upon encountering a superior civilisation of individuals with a more refined culture,

Islamic invaders from Arabia and western Asia broke and burned everything beautiful they came across in India. So morally degenerate were the Muslim Sultans that, rather than attract Hindu “infidels” to Islam through force of personal example and exhortation, they just built a number of mosques at the sites of torn down temples – and foolishly pretended that they had triumphed over the minds and culture of the Hindus. I have seen stones and columns of Hindu temples incorporated into the architecture of several mosque, including the Jama Masjid and Ahmed Shah Masjid in Ahmedabad; the mosque in the Uparkot fort of
Junagadh (Gujarat) and in Vidisha (near Bhopal); the Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra right next to the famous dargah in Ajmer-and the currently controversial Bhojshala “mosque” in Dhar (near Indore).

Hindu culture was at its imaginative best and vigorously creative when the severely-allergic-to-images Muslims entered India. Islamic invaders did not just destroy countless temples and constructions but also suppressed cultural and religious practices; damaged the pristine vigour of Hindu culture; prevented the intensification of Hindu culture, debilitating it permanently; stopped the development of Hindu arts: ended the creative impulse in all realms of thought and action; damaged the people’s cultural pride, disrupted the transmission of values and wisdom, cultural practices and tradition from one generation to the next; destroyed the proper historical evolution of Hindu kingdoms and society; affected the acquisition of knowledge, research and reflection and violated the moral basis of Hindu society.

Slaughter of the Civilian Hindu Population

The Muslim Swordsmen also slaughtered a lot of Hindus civilians away from the battlefield. This was something that the Hindus were not used to. Although pre-Islamic India was not exactly a zone of peace, and there used to be warfare, but there was also a code of warfare too.

War took place from Sunrise up to Sunset

Warfare under the shadow of darkness was considered foul

In the battlefield, an adversary who laid down his arms was not to be slaughtered.

No civilian population was ever killed.

This code of warfare was followed by the Hindus right up to the Muslim invasions, and this was one reason for the successive Hindu defeats at the hands of the Muslims who had no qualms for foul means during warfare and even in peace times.

Needless to add that the Muslim invaders converted millions of Hindus to Islam at the point of the Sword, they also massacred millions more and had a practice of making a tower of severed enemy (Hindu) heads in the main square of a town after its conquest. They abducted many Hindu women and held them as concubines in Harems.

Most Muslim rulers were fanatical proselytizers of their religion. Under the rulership of Delhi Sultans the public worship at Hindu temples was generally forbidden, Hindus were not allowed to build new temples or repair old ones. Some rulers like Allah-ud-din Khilji and Feroz Shah Tughlak would desecrate temples upon the conquest of new territory as a symbol of victory of Islam. One some occasions a particularly fanatical Muslim king like Sikander Lodi would in a fit of paranoia desecrate or destroy temples even in peaceful times.

“In 1669 Aurangzeb issued a general order for the destruction of Hindu temples.” As per rough estimates about 3000 (Three Thousand) temples were destroyed and converted into Mosques in the 750 years of Muslim rule in India. But let bygones be bygones. The fact is mentioned here only to set the record straight. In my personal view all such controversial structures should be taken possession of by an educational trust and be converted into schools to preach the unity of Humankind. And eventually not just such controversial structures, but all places of religious worship should cease to be prayer houses and should be used to house schools for humanist and rationalist education. (This obviously is the author’s personal view)

“During the sultanate and later under Aurangzeb, many hundreds of thousands of Hindus were forcibly converted to Islam. Shah Jahan appointed a superintendent of converts charged with the special responsibility for making converts. The sentences of criminals and prisoners of war were readily remitted and the individuals were granted daily allowances upon embracing Islam. The conversion of Muslims to Hinduism, on the other hand, constituted the crime of apostasy and was punished by death. The Jaziya, a special tax levied on all non-Muslims, was both a heavy financial -burden and a badge of inferiority borne by the Hindu; it also stimulated conversions to Islam.

The Quww’at-ul-Islam Mosque (Power of Islam).
This Mosque which stands in the Kutub Minar complex was built by Kutub-ud-din Aibak, the first Muslim ruler of Delhi. The Quww’at-ul-Islam Mosque (Power of Islam) is the first mosque erected in India by Muslim invaders after the Islamic aggression of India. This Mosque was built with the columns from destroyed Hindu and Jain temples. It stands at the site of Pithoragarh which was the capital of Prithiviraj Chauhan the last Hindu ruler of Delhi.

Thus, during the 7 centuries of Mohammedan rule a significant portion of our countrymen had to change their religion by force of circumstances. And in 4 erstwhile Indian Provinces viz. West Punjab, Sindh, East Bengal and NWFP the Muslim converts came to constitute a majority by the present century. The multi-religious character of India is largely an ugly litter of intolerance, persecution, penal taxes, conversion of faith at the point of the sword, discriminatory civil and criminal laws, defilement and conversion of places of worship from that of one faith to another, all of which the country witnessed during the seven centuries of Muslim rule.

The Psychological Damage to the Hindu Mind

The Hindus suffered immense psychic damage. The Muslims also plundered the wealth of the Hindu kingdoms, impoverished the Hindu populace, and destroyed thc prosperity of India. The Psychological damage to the Hindu Mind, due to Muslim rule, was immense and unmeasurable.

Today after a gap of one thousand years, the innate spirit of humanness that is the basis of Hindu Culture can again breathe freely and it is about time that we recollect it and the successes it propelled the human mind to achieve. The human mind embodied in the ancient sages, rishis, munis and sanyasis – scientists in modern parlance.

We need to remember our past clearly and vividly, lest we forget, our capability to contribute to the repository of human knowledge, lest we forget our capability to activate the indomitable human mind residing within us, lest we forget our humane instincts that gave us a sagacious and charitable view of life along with progress – economic, technological and material. All that which goes under the term CIVILIZATION.

The human spirit in Ancient India has given to the world, the values of non-violence, religious tolerance, renunciation alongwith many elements of knowledge in fields like production technology, mechanical engineering, shipbuilding, navigation, architecture, civil engineering, medical science, physics, chemistry, logic, astronomy, mathematics and so on.

We have to live up to this legacy that can help human beings in all corners of our globe to rejuvenate our spirit not to conquer one another, but to conquer oneself; not to destroy, but to build; not to hate, but to love; not to isolate oneself, but to integrate everyone into one global society and to achieve much more in the future to enrich human civilisation to result in: “The maximum welfare of the maximum number” or as in Sanskrit it is called: “Loko Samasto Sukhino Bhavantu” and “Samasta Janaanaam Sukhino Bhavantu.”

In the next post we shall see what Different Historians have to say about the Hindu Holocaust.
