Any violent attack on uniformed police (or soldiers) is an attack on the nation.
Therefore, the police, or the soldier, has not only the right to self defense, but right to kill the attacker as well.
Any less/soft/weak response than this from the police or the soldier will be seen as the weakness/cowardice of the nation, and that will encourage the anti-nationals to keep attacking on the police, soldiers, or the national and public properties.
