Ahimsa Paramo Dharma Dharma himsa tathaiva cha,,
(Non-violence is the ultimate dharma. So too is violence in service of Dharma).

Incredible. Mantras make man immune to fire and live with almost no food and water?.. Can science catch up?
It seems according to Aghori tradition, what we call Gayatri, is actually Savitri mantra. Real Gayatri mantra is secret and is extremely powerful.

Sresht Dharm (Best Religion)
From: Kirpal Singh < >
Dear Friends,
I present to you a description of a Sresht Dharm from the Guru Granth Sahib (GSS – a holy scripture of the Sikhs, ordained as Guru in 1708, contains Bani of 6 Sikh Gurus, Bhagats – both Hindus and Muslims notably among them are Bhagat Kabir Ji, Farid Ji, Ravidas Ji, Nam Deo Ji… and other Mahapurakhs belonging to low and high caste Hindus.
The authenticity of various compositions is well known and the Spiritual Truths were tested by a row of ten Sikh Gurus (all Indians), starting with Guru Nanak Dev Ji (born in in a Hindu family in 1469) for a period of about 239 years. This is a Granth that belongs to all Indians in the first place with Universal message to forge a sense of brotherhood, unity and prosperity for all.
Sreshat Dharam is described as follows:-
(Raag Gauri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, GSS. page 266-line 13).
Sarab Dhharam Mehi Sraesatt Dhharam ||Har Ko Naam Jap Niramal Karam ||
Of all religions, the best religion
Is to chant the Name of the Lord and maintain pure conduct.
Sagal Kiraaa Mehi Ootham Kiriaa ||Saadhhasang Dhuramath Mal Hiriaa ||
Of all religious rituals, the most sublime ritual
Is to erase the filth of the dirty mind in the Company of the Holy.
Sagal Oudham Mehi Oudham Bhalaa ||Har Kaa Naam Japahu Jeea Sadhaa ||
Of all efforts, the best effort
Is to chant the Name of the Lord in the heart, forever.
Sagal Baanee Mehi Anmrith Baanee ||Har Ko Jas Sun Rasan Bakhaanee ||
Of all speech, the most ambrosial speech
Is to hear the Lord’s Praise and chant it with the tongue.
Sagal Thhaan Thae Ouhu Ootham Thhaan ||Naanak Jih Ghatt Vasai Har Naam ||8||3||
Of all places, the most sublime place,
O Nanak, is that heart in which the Name of the Lord abides. ||8||3||
-The Guru Granth Sahib is not only for turbaned Sikhs but is for all human-beings irrespective of their religion at birth. It is rather unfortunate that Punjabi Hindus who should claim Guru Granth Sahib as their own Granth have mostly turned away from it and Punjabi language, which is their mother tongue.
May I invite those who have exploring minds to have a dip in Guru Granth Sahib – 100% Indian built as the first platform for Interfaith dialogue by the participation of Sikh Gurus and elevated Hindu and Muslim Bhagats. They have common message:-
(Guru Arjan Dev Ji, GGS. 1155-17).
Jis Naam Ridhai This Poorae Kaajaa ||
One who keeps the Naam in his heart – his tasks are perfectly accomplished.
One is free to critise any religion but if you understand your own religion and then attempt to criticise another religion, you might find yourself lost as there may be a lot more in common than trivial differences. I find that there is a lot in common in Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism), Christianity, Islam and Sikhism etc…
As per the Sikh doctrine as given in the Gurbani, a Gur-sikh is defined as one who chants the name and inspies others to do the same, as given below:-
(Raag Gauri Guru Ram Das, GGS, page & line 306-2)
Jan Naanak Dhhoorr Mangai This Gurasikh Kee Jo Aap Japai Avareh Naam Japaavai ||2||
Servant Nanak begs for the dust of the feet of that GurSikh, who himself chants the Naam, and inspires others to chant it. ||2||
Naam is Divine connectivity, which brings bibek-budhi (sumat/sojee/discerning intelect). Guru Nanak Dev Ji says the following about the importance of Naam:-
(Sri Raag Guru Nanak Ji, GGS. 24-9).
Thaa Thoo Mulaa Thaa Thoo Kaajee Jaanehi Naam Khudhaaee ||
You are a Mullah, and you are a Qazi, only when you know the Naam, the Name of God.
Jae Bahuthaeraa Parriaa Hovehi Ko Rehai N Bhareeai Paaee ||2||
You may be very educated, but no one can remain when the measure of life is full. ||2||
Soee Kaajee Jin Aap Thajiaa Eik Naam Keeaa Aadhhaaro ||
He alone is a Qazi, who renounces selfishness and conceit, and makes the One Name his Support.
Hai Bhee Hosee Jaae N Jaasee Sachaa Sirajanehaaro ||3||
The True Creator Lord is, and shall always be. He was not born; He shall not die. ||3||
Panj Vakhath Nivaaj Gujaarehi Parrehi Kathaeb Kuraanaa ||
You may chant your prayers five times each day; you may read the Bible and the Koran.
Naanak Aakhai Gor Sadhaeee Rehiou Peenaa Khaanaa ||4||28||
Says Nanak, the grave is calling you, and now your food and drink are finished. ||4||28||
-Guru Nanak Sahib further makes no secret when he says that Oh Lord, your name alone is my hope and support in life:-
(Sri Raag, Guru Nanak Ji, GGS.24-15).
Thaeraa Eaek Naam Thaarae Sansaar ||Mai Eaehaa Aas Eaeho Aadhhaar ||1|| Rehaao ||
Your Name alone, Lord, saves the world. This is my hope; this is my support. ||1||PauseII
Importance of Naam and names of Waheguru (Ram, Har, Allah and God …..etc) are highlited in holy Vedas, Bible and Quran as well, such as:-
(Raag Raamkali Guru Amar Das Ji, GGS. 919-14).
Vaedhaa Mehi Naam Outham So Sunehi Naahee Firehi Jio Baethaaliaa ||
In the Vedas, the ultimate objective is the Naam, the Name of the Lord; but they do not hear this, and they wander around like demons.
Kehai Naanak Jin Sach Thajiaa Koorrae Laagae Thinee Janam Jooai Haariaa ||19||
Says Nanak, those who forsake Truth and cling to falsehood, lose their lives in the gamble. ||19||
-Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the Chief-Editor of Adi Granth Sahib (which was renamed as Guru Granth Sahib after incorporating the Bani of 9th Sikh Guru, Guru Teg Bhadur Ji), after a considerable research of various Shashtras and Vedas concluded that there is nothing in spiritual path that equals the Lord’s name:-
(Raag Gauri Sukhmanee Guru Arjan Dev Ji, 265-8).
Bahu Saasathr Bahu Simrithee Paekhae Sarab Dtadtol ||Poojas Naahee Har Harae Naanak Naam Amol ||1||
The many Shaastras and the many Simritees – I have seen and searched through them all.
They are not equal to Har, Haray – O Nanak, the Lord’s Invaluable Name. ||1||
-Gur Arjan Dev Ji further favours Naam over other religious practices, which are sunordinate to Naam:-
(Raag Bhairo Guru Arjan Dev Ji, GSS.1136-9).
Varath N Reho N Meh Ramadhaanaa ||This Saevee Jo Rakhai Nidhaanaa ||1||
I do not keep fasts, nor do I observe the month of Ramadaan.
I serve only the One, who will protect me in the end. ||1||
Eaek Gusaaee Alahu Maeraa ||Hindhoo Thurak Dhuhaan Naebaeraa ||1|| Rehaao ||
The One Lord, the Lord of the World, is my God Allah.
He adminsters justice to both Hindus and Muslims. ||1||Pause||
Haj Kaabai Jaao N Theerathh Poojaa ||Eaeko Saevee Avar N Dhoojaa ||2||
I do not make pilgrimages to Mecca, nor do I worship at Hindu sacred shrines.
I serve the One Lord, and not any other. ||2||
Poojaa Karo N Nivaaj Gujaaro ||Eaek Nirankaar Lae Ridhai Namasakaaro ||3||
I do not perform Hindu worship services, nor do I offer the Muslim prayers.
I have taken the One Formless Lord into my heart; I humbly worship Him there. ||3||
Naa Ham Hindhoo N Musalamaan ||Aleh Raam Kae Pindd Paraan ||4||
I am not a Hindu, nor am I a Muslim.
My body and breath of life belong to Allah – to Raam – the God of both. ||4||
If you happen to visit a Sikh Gurduara, you will hear various names of God familiar in Hinduism and Islam being recited with equal devotion with Waheguru. If someone says Waheguru in a Hindu temple, people around will raise eye brows. If some speaks out Waheguru in a mosque, one may not be surprised that some people will come forward to show you the door. It is no different in Church or Synagogue either.
Some examples of recitations of various Divine Names in Gurduara are given hereunder:-
(Raag Raamkali Guru Arjan Dev Ji, GGS. 885-8).
Koee Bolai Raam Raam Koee Khudhaae ||Koee Saevai Guseeaa Koee Alaahi ||1||
Some call Him, ‘Raam, Raam’, and some call Him, ‘Khudaa-i’.
Some serve Him as ‘Gusain’, others as ‘Allaah’. ||1||
Kaaran Karan Kareem ||Kirapaa Dhhaar Reheem ||1|| Rehaao ||
He is the Cause of causes, the Generous Lord
He showers His Grace and Mercy upon us. ||1||Pause||
Koee Naavai Theerathh Koee Haj Jaae ||Koee Karai Poojaa Koee Sir Nivaae ||2||
Some bathe at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, and some make the pilgrimage to Mecca.|
Some perform devotional worship services, and some bow their heads in prayer. ||2||

Kabir Ji has the follwing to say in Guru Granth Sahib:-
(Raag Asa Bhagat Kabir, GGS. 478-17).

I find it very disheartening to note that most learned Indians (Hindus and Muslim) on this Forum when they discuss various religions fail to even mention Sikhism, which is the fifth largest religion in the World. This could be either due to their ignorance or due to some bias.
I invite you to read the Guru Granth Sahib as your own Granth. I have a working knowledge of Punjabi and Hindi (I cannot write a letter in either language) but I can understand 75% of the Gurbani without difficulty. If you know a little bit of Urdu (or Hindustani, the language of Boolywood) and Sanskrit, the comprehension of Gurbani of Guru Granth Sahib becomes relatively easy. The translation of Guru Granth Sahib in Punjabi, English and Hindi is available on the Internet – http://www.gurbanisearch/. There are some ‘teekas’ or helpbooks available in Punjabi/Hindi/English from book stores near major Gurduaras in various cities in India and overseas.
You are free to contact me if you need any further assistance in accessing Gurbani or translation.
With best wishes.

Draft Pledge of Allegiance to Dharma
By A Jalan jalansaab@hotmail.com
Let all Dharmic schools/ aashramas/ organizations/ etc. have a condition for initiation of its adherents (those that have cleared the preparatory stages and are now formally becoming students/members and certainly before they can be considered aacharyas / teachers/ authorities on Dharma) that they take a PLEDGE OF ALLEGIENCE TO DHARMA. So the entry is NOT free anymore – the organization/ tradition must ascertain your seriousness and commitment before opening its doors. We owe this to Dharma. This pledge should be strongly and unequivocally worded, picking everything which is non-negotiable in Dharma (comprising of course the common denominator of all sub-traditions) and which is in opposition to other religions, regardless of its (lack of) political correctness. (I think that would simply be the main points mentioned in Being Different.) A sample draft (Skanda987’s modifications or additions are shown in italics.):
Quote:
Pledge of Allegiance to Dharma
I, <<so-and-so>>, do hereby pledge and affirm, based on my personal experiences/ realization, on my intellectual cogitations and inferences and on the authoritative word of the Rishis (Mantra DrashTaa) whom I regard as perfected beings, my absolute allegiance to the Vedas, the Thought-Word of Brahman as also the fundamental seed-vibrations behind Srishti (creation), as being the Whole and Absolute Truth.
I also do hereby pledge and affirm:
1. That I firmly believe in the Inherent Supreme Divinity of Man, and that every human being has the potential to manifest this Supreme Divinity within his life, based on one of the four broad maargas (ways) of Yoga. That I denounce any theory or dogma or canon that claims human being as born sinner.
2. That I denounce any history-centric view of the world which makes some claimed historical events as exclusive (non-re-enact-able) and some claimed historical figures as having exclusive rights to any spiritual experience. That I firmly believe that any such view is antithetic to the system of Yoga and cannot be accommodated into the grand Vedic universal system.
3. That I denounce any dogma or canon that human beings need intervention from some divine being to attain salvation. That I firmly believe that the soul of Man is qualitatively same with Brahman (God the Supersoul), and as such requires no external intervention to realize that Supreme State. However, practice of a yoga under a realized spiritual master speed up the spiritual progress towards God realization or moksha.
4. That I firmly believe in eternity of the atman (Soul) – having neither birth nor death – which incarnates and re-incarnates as various beings, human or otherwise, based solely on the inviolable law of karma, by the principle of which, every action of a human generates a reaction directed at the human. That one’s karma in present and the past lives decides the course of the one’s birth in the future lives, or freedom from birth-death cycles.
5. That I firmly believe that the principles of Dharma, being infinite in their universality and bereft of sectarianism and exclusivity, are subject to misinterpretation if removed from their original Vedic sources and settings by way of unnecessary and inaccurate de-contextualization. That certain word-concepts involved in such principles are non-translatable in any other language except their original Sanskrit, whose word-sounds also carry distinct seed-vibrations of such concepts.
6. That I accept the authority of the Vedas and its 700-verse short summary Bhagavad Gita as the Book of the Vedic dharma. For all practical purposes Gita is sufficient as defining what is Dharma. I also accept the checks and balance of the Vedic guru, saadhus (those living seriously per dharma), and shaastra (Gita or the Vedas).
I also do hereby pledge and affirm that this is my considered position and any deviation from it, ever in future, will unconditionally and invariably disqualify me from being considered an adherent/ advocate/ authority of Dharma and that in such an instance, I should be considered to have reneged on my allegiance to Dharma. However, I could revert back in Dharma by surrendering to a qualified Vedic spiritual master and living and learning under his/her direction.

Modern science has yet to comprehend, Vedic spiritual and physical sciences.
Rtam, Satyam, Dharmam” (Rig Veda) – Cosmic laws of social, moral and physical order are eternal truths and following these laws (Rta) is Vedic Dharma. All human beings can discover these laws (Rta) by developing Scientific Temper.
Subject: Vedic Physical Sciences and Scientific Temper
Dear Seekers of Vedic Knowledge,
What our ancient heritage scriptures Vedas say about physical sciences, role of scientists (ashvinaus) and scientific temper, a brief note is given below.
To get a feel of Vedic physical sciences, reference to a few hymns are given.
[Note – R.V. or RV in this article means Rig Veda] – skanda987
The Sun never sets or rises and it is the earth, which rotates (Sama-Ved 121). The gravitational effect of solar system makes the earth stable (R.V.1-103-2, 1-115-4 and 5-81-2). The axle of the earth does not get rusted and the earth continues to revolve on its axle (R.V. 1-164-29). The science of Time and its subtle nature is described in (R.V.1-92-12 and 1-95-8). The need to study the properties of water, air and fire for discovering and manufacturing aircrafts, ships and other vehicles capable of moving in the firmament, land and water are mentioned in Rig Veda 1-3-1,2, 1-34-1, 1-140-1 and many other hymns. Reference to infinite number of both gross and subtle atoms and the energy principle as spirit of God in each atom is given in R.V. 5-47-2 and Sama Veda 222. Atoms and sub atomic particles are not inert and have unsuspected vitality owing to this energy principle. Physical sciences relating to agriculture, medicine, astronomy mathematics particularly algebra, toxicology etc. are described in R.V.1-71-9, 4-57-5, Sama Veda 121 and many other hymns.
In the Vedas scientists are described as men and women of absolute self-control, truthful with scientific outlook and destroyers of miseries (R.V., 1-3-4). With the help of these scientists one could travel far on the earth and also in the sky through conveyances, which run and touch the middle region (R.V. 1-3-1, 6-22-2 and 1-22-2). Such scientists from both the sexes go across to distance places quickly like the mind and electricity (R.V. 1-71-9). In this hymn aircrafts and even space ships are hinted. These ashvinaus should be well versed in Physics, agricultural sciences (R.V. 4-57-5), medical sciences (R.V. 5-74-3), astronomy (S.V. 121) and other sciences. Ashvinaus have been advised to learn thoroughly about Prakrti (divine Nature), characteristics and various qualities of water, air, fire, electricity and heat and sound energy. Other sciences mentioned are Toxicology and use of various kinds of medicines and drugs (R.V 1-191-14), science of Time (Kala vidya) that starts with dawn (Usha). R.V. 1-95-2, and 10, refers to use of time for mathematics. There is a mention of infra red rays, study of Algebra (Rekha di ganit vidya), sound as a medium of knowledge for various sciences, diseases like bile, cough, jaundice and others and their treatment etc. The relevant hymns in this regard are in Rig-Veda 1-185-2, 1-12-1, 2, 1-22-1 to 4, 1-2-3, 1-95-1, 1-101-1 and many others.
However, the greater emphasis is on the development of Scientific Temper amongst the members of Society with a view to curb spread of blind faith, hypocrisy, miracle and ostentatious worship of God. Thus the knowledge of Vedic sciences is meant to save the human beings from falling into an utter darkness as Isa Upanishad and the last chapter of Yajur Veda caution us. The unity in diversity is the message of Vedic physical and metaphysical sciences. While matter is the cause of diversity owing to three primordial subtle particles of purity, activity and passivity present in it, the spirit (jiva) provides the necessary unity.
To encourage scientific temper Vedas advise, “O, Man Explore further.” Kindly see for more details on Vedic Science- about Earth, Sun, Gravitation, Moon, Eclipse, telegraphy, ships, aircrafts and many other http://www.aryasamajjamnagar.org
The Vedas combine science with metaphysics and clearly mention that it is God who is the giver of knowledge of all sciences as “Sahstra sam ” (R.V. 1-10-11). The scientists are advised to study cause and effect of all material elements and also how the objects are produced and there after utilize these properly (R.V. 5-47-3). By following these guidelines they can alleviate much suffering of the people (R.V. 5-77-4). Without the knowledge and practical application of physical sciences, it is not possible to eradicate poverty and attain prosperity (R.V. 1-34-1 to 5).

Saraswati Vandanaa – Let’s Adore Saraswati!

Maho arnah Saraswatee, pra-cheta-ya-ti ketu-naa
Dhiyo vishwaa vi raajati – Rig Veda 1:3:10-12
Rig Veda 1:3:10-12
When we act on Veda, when we read, study and teach Veda, a vast Ocean of Knowledge opens up itself. This Knowledge, in a very special way, illumines the intelligence of everyone.
Come, let us all glorify Mother Saraswati. In the first of these three Mantras, Veda is called Saraswati because It overflows with various kinds of Knowledge – physical, social, natural, health, psychological, spiritual and other sciences. When we productively apply these sciences, Veda enhances our life-style, taking away inconveniences, shortcomings and flawed tendencies from our daily experience. Veda possesses an abundance of resources to strengthen our body, mind, intellect and ego. These resources include food, wealth, strength, speed, energy and vitality, and scientific knowledge. In being read and studied, Veda inspires us to make productive use of these resources, face up to challenges in life, act intelligently, perform our required duties and successfully find a place of acceptance in society. In view of blessings that it has to offer us, we ask that Veda help us make our earthly sojourn complete.
We are told in the second Mantra that Veda creates in us inclinations to speak words that are sweet, truthful and healing and to think thoughts that are gracious and compassionate. Parents at home must speak honey-like words to each other. Siblings must act harmoniously with, and not hate, each other, and speak words productive of benevolence.[1] This is the Vedic formula for a successful family. Individuals make up a family, families make up a neighborhood, neighborhoods make up a village and a town, towns make up a city, cities make up a state, states make up a country, and countries make up the world. If families can register peace, grace and benevolence in their home interactions, the whole world will consequently be peaceful, graceful and benevolent. So, we cherish the sentiment that Veda, filled with strategies for success in family, society and country, may uphold, nurture and nourish our individual life, so that all of us at home create and enjoy a harmonious interconnectedness. Let’s demonstrate that life at home can be truly synonymous with harmony.
The third Mantra informs that through activity, through the act of intensely reciting, studying and teaching the Veda, a vast Ocean of Knowledge opens up itself in front of us. There are 20,358 Mantras contained in the Rig, Yajur, Saam and Atharva Vedas. The sum-total knowledge of the Veda is so vast that it takes an equally vast collection of auxiliary literature to explain it to mankind.[2] In ancient times, a student was required to study Veda and its extended auxiliary literature to be considered a scholar. This Knowledge illumines the minds of all who seek Wisdom.

The Importance of the Cow in Vedic Culture
By Subramanian Swamy
Our West-influenced intellectuals sneer at the mention of the cow. The same intellectuals first sneered at yoga. Now it is a fashion to do pranayama at cocktail parties the arguments in the West for cow slaughter are no more uncontested. They also sneered at our sanyasis as ‘godmen’. Now they flock to ashrams with their white friends ever since the Beatles. Who knows, they may soon have a cow in their backyards.
India has 150 million cows, each of them giving an average of less than 200 litres of milk per year. If they could be fed and looked after, they can give 11,000 litres, as Israeli cows do. That would provide milk for the whole world. The milk we produce today is the cheapest in the world. With enhanced production we could become the world’s largest exporter of milk and it could be India’s biggest foreign exchange earner.
For those of us who are desi by pedigree and conviction, I place some facts about the cow in the perspective of modern Hindutva.
The cow was elevated to divinity in the Rig Veda. In Book VI, Hymn XXVIII attributed to Rishi Bhardwaja extols the virtue of the cow. In Atharva Veda (Book X, Hymn X), the cow is formally designated as Vishnu, and `all that the Sun surveys’.
Indian society has addressed the cow as gow mata. The Churning of the Sea episode brings to light the story of the creation of the cow. Five divine Kamadhenus (wish cows), viz, Nanda, Subhadra, Surabhi, Sushila, Bahula emerged in the churning.
Thousands of names in our country are cow-related: Gauhati, Gorakhpur, Goa, Godhra, Gondiya, Godavari, Goverdhan, Gautam, Gomukh, Gokarna, Goyal, Gochar etc.
They signify reverence for the cow, and our abiding faith that the cow is Annapurna.
In 2003, the National Commission on Cattle under Justice G. M. Lodha submitted its recommendations to the NDA government. The report called for stringent laws to protect the cow and its progeny in the interest of the rural economy, a constitutional requirement under Directive Principles of State Policy. Article 48 of the Constitution says: `The State shall endeavour to organise agriculture and animal husbandry on modern and scientific lines and shall, in particular, take steps for preserving and improving the breeds, and prohibiting the slaughter of cows and calves and other milch and draught cattle’. During the First War of Independence in 1857, when Bahadur Shah `Zafar’ was installed as emperor by the Hindus in Delhi for a brief period, his Hindu prime minister, on the emperor’s proclamation, made cow killing a capital offence. In Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s kingdom, the only crime that invited capital punishment was cow slaughter.
The cow, according to the Vedas, provides four products for human use: (i) Godugdha (cow milk): As per Ayurveda, cow milk has fat, carbohydrates, minerals and Vitamin B, and even a capacity for body resistance to radiation and for regenerating brain cells. (ii) Goghruta (ghee): The best ghee, it is, as per Ayurveda useful in many disorders. In yajna, it improves the air’s oxygen level. (iii) Gomutra (urine): Eight types of urine are used for medicinal purpose nowadays, among which cow urine is held to be the best. The Americans are busy patenting it. It has anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and antioxidant properties.
It has immune-modulator properties, which makes it useful for immune deficiency diseases. In the classics there are many references to cow urine as a drug of choice. Even the Parsis follow this practice.
Lastly, (iv), Gomaya (dung) is considered as valuable as Gomutra and used to purify the environment, as it has radium and checks radiation effects.
Ancient Hindu wisdom on the medicinal properties of cow urine is borne out by two patents granted in the US for cow urine distillate (Patent numbers 6410059 and 6896907).
Even China has granted the distillate a patent as a DNA protector. A global patent has been granted for cow urine, neem and garlic as a pest repellent and for fungicidal and growth promoting properties for different crops (WHO 2004/ 087618A1). A US patent has been granted for strains from Sahiwal cow milk for plant growth promoter phytopathogenic fungi controlling activity, abiotic stress tolerating capability, phosphatic solubilisation capability, etc. And CSIR has filed for a US patent for amrit pani, a mixture of cow dung, cow urine and jiggery, for soil health improvement properties.
These claims were initially made in the Charaka Samhita, Sushrut, Vaghbhati and Nighantu, Ratnakar, etc. They prove the utility of cow dung and urine for sustainable agriculture as well as for disease prevention.
The arguments in the West for cow slaughter are no more uncontested. There are better sources of protein than beef. Any dietician’s chart shows that beef with 22 per cent protein ranks below soya-bean (43), groundnut (31) and pulses (24 per cent). One kilogram of beef takes seven kg of crops and 7,000 kg of water to produce.
Thus cow protection makes economic and ecological sense. Swami Dayananda Saraswati, convenor of the Hindu Dharma Acharya Sabha, has argued that non-vegetarianism indirectly contributes heavily to greenhouse gases and other pollution.
He quotes a UN report from 2006 that says, “Raising animals for meat as food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined”. Ten of billions of animals farmed for food release gases such as methane, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide through their massive amounts of manure. “The released methane”, the report says, “has 23 times the global warming potential of CO2”. For these animals to graze, virgin forests are cleared. The livestock industry also needs vast stretches of land to raise mono-crops to feed the animals. The CO2 that the trees and plants store escapes into the air when they are destroyed.
Growing fodder implies heavy use of synthetic fertilizers produced with fossil fuels.
While this process emits a huge amount of CO2, the fertilizer itself releases nitrous oxide (3) — a greenhouse gas that is 296 times more potent than CO2. Alarming though these facts are, all that people have to do is to avoid red meat. There will be no need to breed millions of animals for daily slaughter. The animal population will consequently decline.
A single individual by not consuming meat prevents the equivalent of 1.5 tonnes of CO2 emissions in a year. This is more than the one tonne of CO 2 prevented by switching from a large sedan to a small car.
So there are a number of reasons to be a vegetarian. People who eat meat think a pure vegetarian diet is optional. But now they have no choice if they are alive to what is happening to this life-bearing planet. There is no justification for eating meat, given the devastating consequences for the planet.
A new fervour for a cow renaissance is necessary. It is constitutional (for India) and we should defend it with all our might.
