If they’re non-Muslim

• Consider the most opportune time of day to be able to arrest suspects with minimum resistance

• Apply all necessary force to enter the premises and arrest suspects accordingly.

If they’re Muslim:

• Community leaders must be consulted before raids into Muslim houses.
• Officers must not search occupied bedrooms and bathrooms before dawn.
• Use of police dogs will be considered serious desecration of the premises.
• Cameras and camcorders should not be used in case of capturing women in inappropriate dress.
• If people are praying at home officers should stand aside and not disrupt the prayer. They should be allowed the opportunity to finish.
• Officers should take their shoes off before raiding a Muslim house.
• The reasons for pre-dawn raids on Muslim houses needs to be clear and transparent.
• Officers must not touch holy books or religious artifacts without permission.
• Muslim prisoners should be allowed to take additional clothing to the station.

With this continuing appeasement, no wonder it’s now predicted that Britain will become an Islamic state by 2070. (Time to think about your children.)

In 1952 President Truman established one day a year as a “National Day of Prayer.”

In 1988 president Reagan designated the First Thursday in May of each year as the National Day of Prayer.

In June 2007 then Presidential Candidate Barack Obama declared that the USA was no longer a Christian nation.

This year President Obama canceled the 21st annual National Day of Prayer ceremony at the White House under the rouse of “not wanting to offend anyone.”

On September 25, 2009 from 4 am until 7 pm, a National Day of Prayer for the Muslim religion was Held on Capitol Hill, beside the White House. There were over 50,000 Muslims that Day in DC.

I guess it doesn’t matter if “Christians” are offended by this event – We obviously don’t count as “anyone” anymore.

The direction this country is headed should strike fear in the heart of every Christian, especially knowing that the Muslim religion believes that if Christians cannot be converted they should be annihilated.

Shri Anand Shankar has done a timely service by collecting article of his own and of others who have written on the scourage of terrorism confronting India today. What is terrorism and how do we deter terrorist acts in our country?

Media coverage of every terrorist incident over the years has complicated the difficulties of defining terrorism because there is no distinction drawn in the media between pure terrorist acts and terrorism as a phenomenon. A common accepted definition of terrorism does not exist even amongst the various concerned anti-terrorism agencies across the globe. The definition of terrorism as a phenomenon hinges on three characteristics: the goals, the method, and the identity of the perpetrator of acts of terror.

Terrorism is a threat to our national security. A nation enjoys national security only if it does not have to sacrifice its national interests and legitimate aspirations to avoid violent conflicts, and also committed and able if challenged, to defend these interests by war if necessary. National security requires thus a nation’s determination to preserve certain interests are: nation’s integrity, political independence, and fundamental political institutions. Thus, India’s national security policy must concern preserving the nation’s territorial integrity, political independence, fundamental democratic institutions and ancient cultural values.

Terrorism is thus premeditated politically motivated and/or religiously-inspired violence perpetrated against non-combatant target population by clandestine agents, by intimidation to overawe the civilian population, to do or not do an act against their will and well being. It is a strategy of violence by the perpetrators to generate fear, disruption, and ultimately secure their nefarious objectives through capitulation of the civilian law-abiding citizens.

What is Terrorism?

U.S.Fed.Cr. Code Chapter 113b Part I of Title 18 defines terrorism briefly as: Life threatening acts to coerce civilian population or influence policy of a government by intimidation and affect its conduct.

India has had chequered history of combating terrorism. The earliest terror tactics in modern India were deployed in Bengal in 1946 by extremist Muslim leaders, Sunhrawardly and Jinnah, to terrorize Hindus to give in on the demand for Pakistan, The Congress Party claiming to represent the Hindus capitulated who were 75 per cent of the population and handed 25 percent of the territory of India on a platter to Mohammed Ali Jinnah soon thereafter. Things have not improved much since then. According to Union Home Ministry’s Annual Report to Parliament, it is stated that of the 35 States of today’s India,29 are afflicted by terrorism. There are about 25 terrorist attacks per month in the country. India is thus a seriously terror-challenged nation.

Although terrorism is certainly not a phenomenon of the twentieth century, its growth since 1968 has been greatly enhanced by three specific innovations of the 20th century. First, the invention of television with instant satellite relay which had suddenly given small unknown groups the possibility of a worldwide publicity manifold. The fact, that most terrorist incidents have taken place in the democratic states may in part be due to the availability of this instant publicity.

With the freely available media, small groups of terrorists can achieve heavy leverage against powerful opponents by focusing large publicity on politically small events. The impace is mostly psychological and meant for media coverage.

Second, the incredible sophistication of modern weapons and its proliferation have enabled small number of criminal minded persons to do great harm. The erstwhile Soviet Union was largely the suppliers of these weapons starting with AK-47. In 1973, for example, the Italian police nabbed five Arab terrorists who were setting up SA-7 missiles in a rented apartment four miles from Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Airport. These missiles were intended for use against an Israel Civilian airliner. The SA-7 is a Soviet heat-seeking, precision guided missile. It can be carried comfortably on a man’s back and can destroy a plane at altitudes of up to 6,500 feet. United States intelligence sources have reported that SA-7 missiles have surfaced in almost all Arab countries and some African nations, including Mozambique. Libya had obtained from the USSR large quantities of RPG-7 rockets which weigh under ten pounds, can be hand carried and can destroy a tank, a speaker’s platform, or a limousine. In this connection, the IRA is known to have used RPG-7 rockets against armored British military vehicles and police instillations.

Third, easy communication through internet and cell/satellite phones enabled active co-operation between various terrorist groups. The pilgrims at Lord Airport in Israel were massacred by Japanese Red Army (JRA) members acting for the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The terrorists who raided the Vienna OPEC meeting were made up of elements from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a PLO group, and the Badder-Meinhof gang (Rote Armee Fraktion, RAF), the West German anarchist group.

Within India, the LTTE, PWG, ULFA, Naxaliies, Nepal Maoists, Al Qaeda are all coordinating their terrorist activities and training.

Since Independence, during the last six decades, the British imperialist-inspired Dravidian Movement founded by E.V.Ramaswamy Naicker, in the name of rationalism, tried to debunk as irrational the Hindu religion, and terrorized the Hindu priestly class, i.e., the Brahmins, for propagating the Hindu religion. The goal was to make Tamil Nadu State secede from India. The movement’s organizational arm, the Dravida Kazhagam (DK), had even venerated Ravana for fifty years to spite the Hindu adoration of Rama and vulgarize the abduction of Sita to create the psychology of separateness. These DK semi-literatures belatedly learnt that Ravana was himself a Brahmin and a pious bhakta of Lord Shiva too. The DK have now abandoned praising Ravana, and have instead become agents of the anti-Indian LTTE, which terrorist organization has specialized in killing Hindu Tamil leadership of Sri Lanka.

In the 1960s, the Christian missionaries inspired the Nagas to seek secession. The Nagas that wanted to further amputate the nation by seeking secession of Nagaland from the Indian nation. In the 1980s, the Hindus of Manipur were targeted by foreign trained elements. Manipuris were told: give up Hinduism or be killed. In Kashmir, since the beginning of the 1990s, militants in league with the Pakistani trained terrorists also targeted the Hindus by driving the Hindu pandit community out of the Valley, or killing them or dishonoring their women folk.

Globally today, the US, Israel and India are seen as the principal target nation for terrorists. And within India, the Hindus are the targets only because they are Hindus, while the leading terrorists are Islamic Fundamentalists.

Recognizing that in the targeting of Hindus, Muslim of India are largely just passive spectators. Islamic terrorists are beginning to engage in terrorist acts that could pit Muslims against Hindus in nation-wide conflagration and possible civil war as in Serbia and Bosnia.

Therefore we have to have a collective mindset as Hindus to stand against the terrorists. In this response, Muslim and Christians of India can join us if they genuinely feel for the Hindu. That they do would be credible if though they may be Muslims or Christians, they proudly declare that their ancestors are Hindus. It is not easy for them to acknowledge this ancestry because the Muslim Mullahs and Christian Missionaries would consider it as unacceptable since that realization of Hindu ancestry would dilute the religious fervor in their faith and also create an option for those who do so acknowledge, for re-conversion to the Hinduism. Hence, these religious leaders preach hatred and violence against the kafir and the pagan i.e. the Hindu to keep the faith of their followers. The Islamic terrorist outfits, e.g. the SIMI being the latest, has already resolved that Indi is Darul Harab, and they are committed to make it Darul Islam. That makes them free of any moral compunction whatsoever in dealing with Hindus. This mentality is at the root of Islamic terrorism in India.

But still, if any Muslim or Christian does so acknowledge his or heir Hindu legacy, then Hindus can accept him or her as a part of the Brihad Hindu Samaj, which is Hindustan. India that is Bharat that is Hindustan is a nation of Hindus and those others whose ancestors are Hindus. Even Parsi and Jews in India have Hindu ancestors. Others, those who refuse to so acknowledge or those foreigners who become Indian citizens by registration can remain in India, but should not have voting rights (which means thy cannot be elected representatives).

Four Lessons from History

Hence, the first four lessons from history to be learnt from re-centhistory, for tackling terrorism in India is that the Hindu is target and that Muslims of India are being programmed to slide into suicide against Hindus. It is to undermine the Hindu psyche and create fear of civil war that terror attacks are organized. And hence since the Hindu is the target. Hindus must collectively respond as Hindus against the terrorist and not feel individually isolated or worse, be complacement because he or she is not personally affected. This is an essential mental attitude, a necessary part of a virat Hindu (for fuller discussion of the concept of virat Hindu, see my Hindus Under Seige: The Way Out.,Haranand,2006).

Hence, to begin with, any policy to combat terrorism must first begin with requiring each and every Hindu becoming a committed or virat Hindu, or be ostracized as a ‘tankhiya’. If it is not enough commitment if one claims to be Hindu, or goes to temples, does pujas, and celebrates festivals. That is not sufficient to be a committed or virat Hindu. To be a virat Hindu one must have a Hindu mindset.

The second lesson for combating the terrorism we face today that we need to learn is: since demoralizing the Hindu and undermining the Hindu foundation of India in order to destroy the Hindu civilization, is the goal of all terrorists in India, we must never capitulate and never concede any demand of the terrorists. Terrorists are encouraged by appeasement but never satisfied by it. Therefore, no matter how many Hindus have to die for it, the basic policy has to be : never yield to any demand of the terrorists. That necessary resolve has not been shown in our recent history. Instead ever since we conceded Pakistan in 1947 under duress, we have been mostly yielding time and time again.

In 1989, to obtain the release of Mufti Mohammed Sayeed’s daughter, Rubaiyya who had been ‘kidnapped by terrorists, five terrorists in Indian jails were set free by the V.P.Singh’s Government. This made these criminals in the eyes of Kashmiri separatists and fence sitters as heroes, as those who had brought India’s Hindu establishment on it’s knees. To save Rubaiyya it was not necessary to surrender to terrorist demands.

However, in 1991, when Chandrashekhar was PM, I was his senior Minister handling the Law & Justice portfolio, Saifuddin Soz’s daughter was kidnapped by the JKLF. They too made the same demand (release of four terrorists in jail), but we refused. We also took some secret retaliatory action which made the JKLF frightened and hence Soz’s daughter was put on an auto rickshaw and sent home unharmed. This toughness was shown at a time when our government was tottering and to fall! The difference with the V.P. Singh’s Government was in our mindset it had become clear from day one of the kidnapping to the JKLF that we meant business as also that two can play the game of terror.

We also showed similar grit and guts when we received information that LTTE had established a parallel establishment in Tamil Nadu, with Karunanidhi’s connivance. Most of the senior bureaucrats of our government had warned that we risked bloodshed and rise of separatist Dravidian movement, sacked the Governor for inaction, and smashed the terror infrastructure in the State. Had we not done that then, Tamil Nadu would have been worse today than Kashmir. Thus toughness on both occasions was rewarded.

The worst capitulation to terrorists in our modern history was in the Indian Airlines hijack incident in December end 1999. The terrorists after hijacking an India Airlines flight from Kathmandu to Delhi, demanded money and release of three of the most dreaded terrorists held in judicial custody in Jammu jail (Maulana Masood Azhar, Omar Sheikh, and Ahmed Zargar). About 40 police persons had earlier died in various encounters to capture them. Yet in the call of saving the lives of 259 passengers in the IA Airbus parked in Kandhahar, the government released these terrorists even without getting court permission (required since they were in judicial custody). Moreover they were escorted by a senior Minister on the PM’s special Boeing all the way to Kandhahar as royal guests instead of being shoved across the Indo-Pakistan border.

Worst still, all the three after being freed, went back to Pakistan and created three separate terrorist organizations to kill Hindus. Mohammed Azhar, whom the National Security Adviser Brijesh Mishra had then described (on NDTV) as “as mere harmless cleric”, upon his release led the LeT to savage and repeated terrorists attacks on Hindus all over India from Bangalore to Srinagar. Since mid-2000, Azhar is responsible for killing of over 2000 Hindus. Omar Sheikh is in jail for killing US journalist Daniel Pearl and is in US custody, while the third, Zargar is engaged today in random killing of Hindus in Doda and Jammu.

The third lesson to be learnt is that whatever and however small the terrorist incident, the nation must retaliate not by measured and “sober” responses but by massive retaliation. For example, when Ayodhya Temple was sought to be attacked, or the Institute of Science in Bangalore was targeted, these were not big terrorist incidents but we should have massively retaliated. Our Intelligence agencies keep telling me in private that we have clinching proof of terrorist training camps in POK and Bangladesh, and Indian government also claims proof which has not been made public that there are 57 camps in Pakistani held territory and 36 camps in Bangladesh.

We could demand territory from Bangladesh for all those illegal Bangladeshis settled in India. After all, Partition was for those Muslims who could not bear to live with Hindus. And yet if Muslims have returned to live with Hindus, then the territory of Bangladesh should be reduced in proportion to millions of Bangladesis that have come to India and the Hindus pushed out since 1947. Strategically, northern one-third of Bangladesh above the line drawn from Khulna to Sylhet could then be annexed if Bangladesh does not take back its people.

The fourth lesson to learn is that more than the overt threat of the terrorists in India, the more sinister corrosion of our nation state occurs from within. This corrosion provides ‘a force multiplier’ to the terrorists. That is, the terrorists are able to leverage the influence of highly placed individuals in the government, media and academic, who have been compromised by the terrorists and blackmailed on sex, drug money and illegitimate favors, into collaborating with them. Take for example the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. He had been the Prime Minister, and the LTTE killed him because it claimed that he had to be punished for sending the IPKF to Sri Lanka. The dispatch of the Indian army was a government policy ratified by Parliament, and yet the LTTE arrogated to itself the right to hold Rajiv Gandhi responsible and to be murdered for it. In other words, the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi was a challenge to India’s sovereignty and self- respect itself, that a foreign terrorist organization can decide to kill because it does not like a policy of the government of India. Incidentally, the LTTE was a party to the decision to send the IPKF, but found soon enough the Indian army was not going to do the LTTE’s dirty work and hand over a Eelam to them on a platter. So they turned against India. So, it was perfidy too.

But instead of revulsion against the LTTE that any Indian patriot in government, media or academia would feel, we find that there are political parties, such as the DMK, PMK and MDMk which have no shame in stating that Rajiv Gandhi deserved to die. More surprisingly, the widow of Rajiv Gandhi, Ms. Sonia Gandhi finds nothing wrong with having political alliance with these parties which praise the killers of her husband. Furthermore, Ms. Gandhi wrote to the President that the four LTTE/DK criminals to be hanged on the orders of the Supreme Court (delivered on May 12, 1999), should be given a lesser sentence of life imprisonment even though the four criminals did not ask for mercy !! Is this her concept of zero tolerance for terrorism, or is there some mysterious reason why Ms. Gandhi wrote this letter ? And why is it that ever since the assassination till today Ms. Gandhi has not written a single letter to the President or raised in Lok Sabha demanding the immediate extradition of the LTTE supreme and Accused No.1 in the Rajiv murder case, V. Prabhakaran, or even carpet bombing of his hideout in Mullaitheevu or wherever in Sri Lanka ? Even the media and the academia does not write op-ed pages demanding action. Why does not the media raise the question of alliance of Congress with pro-LTTE parties with her ? What is behind this conspiracy of silence ?

One thing is for sure-terrorists in India of all hues and background have their compromised moles in the India’s Establishment, and hence no anti-terrorist policy can succeed unless these fifth column elements are weeded out. The IB/RAW/MI/CRPF all have files on them and so identifying them is no problem. The political support these traitors have to be withdrawn and some have to be made an example of. Hence, these four lessons are the core of a new strategy for deterring terrorism in India.

Salute the Danish Flag – it’s a Symbol of   Western Freedom

In 1978-9, I was living and studying in Denmark. But in 1978, even in Copenhagen, one didn’t see Muslim immigrants.

The Danish population embraced visitors, celebrated the exotic, went out of its way to protect each of its citizens. It was proud of its new  brand of socialist liberalism one in development since the conservatives had  lost power in 1929 – a system where no worker had to struggle to survive,  where one ultimately could count upon the state as in, perhaps, no other  western nation at the time.

The rest of Europe saw the Scandinavians as free-thinking, progressive and infinitely generous in their welfare policies. Denmark boasted low crime rates, devotion to the environment, a superior educational system and a history of humanitarianism.

Denmark was also most generous in its immigration policies – it offered the best welcome in Europe to the new immigrant: generous welfare payments from first arrival plus additional perks in transportation, housing and education. It was determined to set a world example for inclusiveness and multi-culturalism.  How could it have predicted that one day in 2005 a series of political cartoons in a newspaper would spark violence that would leave dozens dead in  the streets – all because its commitment to multiculturalism would come back  to bite?

By the 1990s the growing urban Muslim population was obvious – and   its unwillingness to integrate into Danish society was obvious.  Years of immigrants had settled into Muslim-exclusive enclaves. As the Muslim leadership became more vocal about what they considered the decadence of Denmarks’ liberal way of life, the Danes – once so welcoming – began to feel slighted. Many Danes had begun to see Islam as incompatible with their long-standing values: belief in personal liberty and free speech, inequality for women, intolerance for other ethnic groups, and a deep pride in Danish heritage and history.

An article by Daniel Pipes and Lars  Hedegaard, in which they forecast, accurately, that the growing im-migrant problem in Denmark would explode. In the article they reported:

‘Muslim immigrants constitute 5 percent of the population but consume upwards of 40 percent of the welfare spending.
   
‘Muslims are only 4 percent of Denmarks’ 5.4 million people but make  up a majority of the countrys’ convicted rapists, an especially combustible issue given that practically all the female victims are non-Muslims. Similar, if lesser, disproportions are found in other crimes.’

‘Over time, as Muslim immigrants increase in numbers, they wish less to mix with the indigenous population.  A recent survey finds that only 5 percent of young Muslim immigrants would readily marry a Dane.’

‘Forced marriages – promising a newborn daughter in Denmark to a male cousin in the home country, then compelling her to marry him, sometimes on pain of death – are one problem.’

‘Muslim leaders openly declare their goal of introducing Islamic law once Denmarks’ Muslim population grows large enough – a not-that-remote prospect. If present trends persist, one sociologist estimates, every third inhabitant of Denmark in 40 years will be Muslim.’

It is easy to understand why a growing number of Danes would feel that   Muslim immigrants show little respect for Danish values and laws.
 
An example is the phenomenon common to other European countries and   Canada: some Muslims in Denmark who opted to leave the Muslim faith have been murdered in the name of Islam, while others hide in fear for their lives. Jews are also threatened and harassed openly by Muslim leaders in Denmark, a country where once Christian citizens worked to smuggle out nearly all of their 7,000 Jews by night to Sweden – before the Nazis could invade. I think of my Danish friend Elsa – who, as a teenager, had dreaded crossing the street to the bakery every morning under the eyes of occupying Nazi soldiers – and I wonder what she would say today.

In 2001, Denmark elected the most conservative government in some 70 years – one that had some decidedly non-generous ideas about liberal unfettered immigration. Today, Denmark has the strictest immigration policies in Europe. Its effort to protect itself has been met with accusations of  ‘racism’ by liberal media across Europe – even as other governments struggle to right the social problems wrought by years of too-lax immigration.

If you wish to become Danish, you must attend three years of language classes. You must pass a test on Denmarks’ history, culture and a Danish language test.

You must live in Denmark for 7 years before applying for citizenship.

You must demonstrate an intent to work, and have a job waiting. If you wish to bring a spouse into Denmark, you must both be over 24 years of age, and you won’t find it so easy anymore to move your friends and family to   Denmark with you.

You will not be allowed to build a mosque in Copenhagen. Although your children have a choice of some 30 Arabic culture and language schools in Denmark, they will be strongly encouraged to assimilate to Danish society   in ways that past immigrants weren’t.

In 2006, the Danish minister for employment, Claus Hjort Frederiksen,  spoke publicly of the burden of Muslim immigrants on the Danish welfare  system, and it was horrifying: the governments’ welfare committee had  calculated that if immigration from Third World countries were blocked, 75  percent of the cuts needed to sustain the huge welfare system in coming decades would be unnecessary. In other words, the welfare system, as it existed, was being exploited by immigrants to the point of eventually bankrupting the government. 
‘We are simply forced to adopt a new policy on immigration.’

‘The calculations of the welfare committee are terrifying and show how unsuccessful the integration of immigrants has been up to now,’ he said.

A large thorn in the side of Denmarks’ imams is the Minister of Immigration and Integration, Rikke Hvilshoj. She makes no bones about the  new policy toward immigration, ‘The number of foreigners coming to the  country makes a difference,’ Hvilshoj says, ‘There is an inverse correlation between how many come here and how well we can receive the foreigners that  come.’ And on Muslim immigrants needing to demonstrate a willingness to blend in, ‘In my view, Denmark should be a country with room for different cultures and religions. Some values, however, are more important than others. We refuse to question democracy, equal rights and freedom of speech.’

Hvilshoj has paid a price for her show of backbone. Perhaps to test her resolve, the leading radical imam in Denmark, Ahmed Abdel Raman Abu  Alban, demanded that the government pay blood money to the family of a  Muslim who was murdered in a suburb of Copenhagen, stating that the familys’  thirst for revenge could be thwarted for money. When Hvilshoj dismissed his demand, he argued that in Muslim culture the payment of retribution money  was common, to which Hvilshoj replied that what is done in a Muslim country is not  necessarily what is done in Denmark. 

The Muslim reply came soon after: her house was torched while she, her husband and children slept. All managed to escape unharmed, but she and her family were moved to a secret location and she and other ministers were assigned bodyguards for the first time – in a country where such murderous violence was once so scarce.

Her government has slid to the right, and her borders have tightened. Many believe that what happens in the next decade will determine whether Denmark survives as a bastion of good living, humane thinking and social responsibility, or whether it becomes a nation at civil war with supporters of Sharia law.

And meanwhile, Canadians clamor for stricter immigration policies, and demand an end to state welfare programs that allow many immigrants to live on the public dole. As we in Canada look at the enclaves of Muslims amongst  us, and see  those who enter our shores too easily, dare live on our taxes, yet refuse to embrace our culture, respect our traditions, participate in  our legal system, obey our laws, speak our language, appreciate our history.  We would do well to look to Denmark, and say a prayer for her future and for our own.

Fighting is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not. Do not marry unbelieving women (idolaters), until they believe: A slave woman who believes is better than an unbelieving woman, even though she allures you. Nor marry (your girls) to unbelievers until they believe: A man slave who believes is better than an unbeliever, even though he allures you. Unbelievers do (but) beckon you to the Fire. But Allah beckons by His Grace to the Garden (of bliss) and forgiveness, and makes His Signs clear to mankind: That they may celebrate His praise. Religious Intolerance of Tipu Sultan

RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE OF TIPU SULTAN

INTRODUCTION

 

Tipu Sultan had, ruled his kingdom only for sixteen-and- a-half years, from December 7, 1782 to May 4, 1799. The territory of Malabar was under his effective control only for a short period of eight years. If he had not secured the assistance of the wily Purnaiyya, there would not have been so many Muhammadans in the states of Kerala and Karnataka. Hindus also would not have become less prosperous, and fewer in number.

 

When that Brahmin Prime Minister, Purnaiyya, presented to Tipu Sultan 90,000 soldiers, three crore rupees, and invaluable ornaments made of precious stones, he was tempted to rule as the Emperor of the South India . Tipu did not consider the Hindu rulers of Maharashtra , Coorg and Travancore or the Muslim ruler Nizam as impediments. He was afraid of only the British. He had convinced himself that he could easily become the Emperor of South India if he could somehow vanquish the British. Because of his intense anti-British attitude, the so-called progressive and secular historians have made a vain attempt to paint Tipu Sultan as a great national hero.

 

Opposition to foreign powers need not always be due to love for one’s country. To achieve his selfish goal and to face the British forces, Tipu Sultan sought the assistance of another foreign power, the French, who were manoeuvring to establish their own domination in the country. How is it possible, therefore, for Tipu Sultan to be an enemy of foreign forces when he himself had sought help from Napoleon who was then a prisoner in St. Helena Island and also the French King, Louis XVI?

 

Besides, he also wanted to establish Islamic rule in the country; to achieve that he had to first defeat the British. For this purpose, Tipu Sultan solicited the assistance of Muslim countries like Persia , Afghanistan and Turkey . It is true that Tipu did not harm the Raja of Cochin or anyone for that matter who surrendered and pledged loyalty to him. But how does that make him a friend of Hindus?

 

Tipu and the Nizam were the only Muslim rulers in the Deccan at that time and hence he wanted to avoid any dispute with the Nizam. He insisted that the Nizam should agree to give his daughter in marriage to his son. But the Nizam, considering Tipu as an upstart with no aristocratic heredity, refused the offer. (According to Bhagwan Gidwani, Hyder Ali Khan had suggested earlier to the Nizam that he should agree to the marriage of his daughter to the young Tipu, then in his teens.) As if to spite the Nizam, Tipu Sultan got another of his sons married to the daughter of Arackal Bibi of Cannanore mainly to secure the loyalty of Malabar Muslims for subjugating the entire Malabar region. The result was for everybody to see in due course. It may be noted that the family of Arackal Bibi, though converted to Islam, followed the matriarchal system a system which the Muslim fanatic, Tipu, wanted to reform.

 

HE WANTED TO BE A PADISHAH

He wanted to become an Emperor after defeating the British. He wanted to achieve his ambition after consulting the astrologers. There were a few Brahmin astrologers in Sree Ranganatha Swami Temple . They predicted that if some of the suggested remedial rituals were performed, Tipu would achieve his cherished ambition. Believing that he could become the undisputed ruler of the whole of South India, after defeating the British, he performed all the suggested rituals in the Sree Ranaganatha Swami Temple , besides giving costly presents to the astrologers. This act is being widely interpreted by secularist historians as love and respect for Hindu religion and traditions! They also doubt if there were any Hindu temples which were desecrated or destroyed by Tipu Sultan and his Islamic army in Malabar.

 

The reputed historian, Lewis Rice, who wrote the History of Mysore after going through various official records, stated as follows: “In the vast empire of Tipu Sultan on the eve of his death, there were only two Hindu temples having daily pujas within the Sreerangapatanam fortress. It is only for the satisfaction of the Brahmin astrologers who used to study his horoscope that Tipu Sultan had spared those two temples. The entire wealth of every Hindu temple was confiscated before 1790 itself mainly to make up for the revenue loss due to total prohibition in the country.”

 

There are people who proclaim to the world that Tipu Sultan’s rule was fair and progressive in his own state of Mysore . It would be appropriate to have a look at what a Mysorean, M.A. Gopal Rao, stated a few years ago in one of his articles: ‘In a deliberately designed taxation scheme, the religious prejudice of Tipu Sultan became quite clear. His co-religionists, Muslims, were exempted from house tax, commodity tax and also the levy on other items of household use. Those who were converted to Muhammadanism, were also given similar tax exemptions. He had even made provisions for the education of their children. Tipu Sultan discontinued the practice of appointing Hindus in different administrative and military jobs as practised by his father, Hyder Ali Khan, in the past. He had deep hatred towards all non-Muslims. During the entire period of sixteen years of his regime, Purnaiyya was the only Hindu who had adorned the post of Dewan or minister under Tipu Sultan. In 1797 (two years before his death) among the 65 senior Government posts, not even a single Hindu was retained. All the Mustadirs were also Muslims. Among the 26 civil and military officers captured by the British in 1792 there were only 6 non-Muslims. In 1789, when the Nizam of Hyderabad and other Muslim rulers decided that only Muslims would be appointed henceforth in all Government posts, Tipu Sultan also adopted the same policy in his Mysore State . Just because they were Muslims, even those who were illiterate and inefficient, were also appointed to important Government posts. Even for getting promotions, one still had to be a Muslim under Tipu Sultan’s regime. Considering the interest and convenience of only Muslim officers, all the records relating to tax revenue, were ordered to be written in Persian rather than in Marathi and Kannada as followed earlier. He even tried to make Persian the State language in place of Kannada. In the end all the Government posts were filled by lazy and irresponsible Muslims. As a consequence the people had to suffer a great deal because of those fun-seeking and irresponsible Muslim officers. The Muslim officers, occupying important posts at all levels, were all dishonest and unreliable persons. Even when people complained to him with evidences against those officers, Tipu Sultan did not care to inquire about the complaints lodged.”
EVEN THE PLACE-NAMES WERE CHANGED

Gopal Rao had written all these on the basis of the writings of Tipu’s own son, Ghulam Muhammad, and Muslim historians like Kirmani. Even the Hindu names of places, the Sultan could not tolerate. Therefore, Mangalapuri (Mangalore) was changed to Jalalabad, Cannanore (Kanwapuram) to Kusanabad, Bepur (Vaippura) to Sultanpatanam or Faruqui, Mysore to Nazarabad, Dharwar to Quarshed-Sawad, Gooty to Faiz-Hissar, Ratnagiri to Mustafabad, Dindigul to Khaliqabad, and Calicut (Kozhikode) to Islamabad. It was after the death of Tipu Sultan that the local people reverted to old names.

 

ISLAMIC ATROCITIES IN COORG, BEDNUR, AND MANGALORE

The cruelties which Tipu Sultan committed in Coorg, has no parallel in history. On one occasion, he forcibly converted over ten thousand Hindus to Muhammadanism. On another occasion he captured and converted to Islam more than one thousand Hindu Coorgis before imprisoning them in the Sreerangapatanam fortress. In the period of confusion and anarchy prevailing in Sreerangapatanam during the last war of Tipu Sultan against the British, all the Coorgi prisoners escaped from the prison and became Hindus again after reaching their native kingdom. Against the solemn oath given to the Raja of Coorg, Tipu Sultan forcibly abducted a young princess from the Coorg royal family and made her his wife against her will.

 

The atrocities committed by Tipu Sultan in Bidnur in North Karnataka during and after its capture by him, were most barbarous and beyond description. Ayaz Khan who was Kammaran Nambiar from Chirackal Kingdom before his forcible conversion to Islam by Hyder Ali Khan, had been appointed as Governor of Bidnur. Tipu Sultan was jealous of and opposed to Ayaz Khan from the very beginning because Hyder Ali Khan had considered the latter more intelligent and smart. When Ayaz Khan learnt that Tipu Sultan was scheming to kill him secretly, he escaped to Bombay with plenty of gold. Tipu Sultan came to Bednur and forcibly converted its entire population to Islam. The people accepted Islam for the sake of their lives.

 

After the capture of Mangalore, thousands of Christians were also forcibly sent to Sreerangapatanam where all of them were circumcised and converted to Islam. Tipu Sultan’s justification was that during the Portuguese domination, prior to the arrival of the British, many Muslims had been converted to Christianity by their Missionaries. He proudly proclaimed his action as a sort of punishment for the conversion of many Muslims by the Portuguese.

 

Then he marched upto Kumbla on the northern borders of Kerala, forcibly converting to Islam every Hindu on the way. This time, his argument (repeated by the Muslim and secularist historians of today) was that if all belonged to one religion – Muhammadanism – there would be unity and consequently it would be easy to defeat the British!

 

INSIDE MALABAR

In Malabar, the main target of Tipu Sultan’s atrocities were Hindus and Hindu temples. According to Lewis B. Boury, the atrocities committed by Tipu Sultan against Hindus in Malabar were worse and more barbarous than those committed against the Hindus in Hindustan by the notorious Mahmud of Ghazni, Alauddin Khalji, and Nadir Shah. He disputes in his book Mukherjee’s version that Tipu Sultan had converted only his opponents. Normally even a cruel person kills or tortures only his enemies. But that argument does not justify the cruelties committed by him against innocent women and children.

 

DANCE OF THE ISLAMIC SATAN

According to the Malabar Manual of William Logan who was the District Collector for some time, Thrichambaram and Thalipparampu temples in Chirackal Taluqa, Thiruvangatu Temple (Brass Pagoda) in Tellicherry, and Ponmeri Temple near Badakara were all destroyed by Tipu Sultan. The Malabar Manual mention that the Maniyoor mosque was once a Hindu temple. The local belief is that it was converted to a mosque during the days of Tipu Sultan.

Vatakkankoor Raja Raja Varma in his famous literary work, History of Sanskrit Literature in Kerala, has written the following about the loss and destruction faced by the Hindu temples in Kerala during the military regime (Padayottam) of Tipu Sultan: “There was no limit as to the loss the Hindu temples suffered due to the military operations of Tipu Sultan. Burning down the temples, destruction of the idols installed therein and also cutting the heads of cattle over the temple deities were the cruel entertainments of Tipu Sultan and his equally cruel army. It was heartrending even to imagine the destruction caused by Tipu Sultan in the famous ancient temples of Thalipparampu and Thrichambaram. The devastation caused by this new Ravana’s barbarous activities have not yet been fully rectified.”

 

KOZHIKODE MADE A GRAVEYARD

As per the provisions of the Treaty of Mangalore of 1784, the British had allowed Tipu Sultan to have his suzerainty over Malabar. ‘In consequence, the Hindus of Malabar had to suffer the most severe enormities the world had ever known in history,’ observes K.V. Krishna Iyer, in his famous book, Zamorins of Calicut, based on historical records available from the royal house of Zamorins in Calicut . “When the second-in-line of Zamorins, Eralppad, refused to cooperate with Tipu Sultan in his military operations against Travancore because of Tipu’s crude methods of forcible circumcision and conversion of Hindus to Islam, the enraged Tipu Sultan took a solemn oath to circumcise and convert the Zamorin and his chieftains and Hindu soldiers to Islamic faith,” he adds.

 

L.B. Boury writes: “To show his ardent devotion and steadfast faith in Muhammaddan religion, Tipu Sultan found Kozhikode to be the most suitable place. It was because the Hindus of Malabar refused to reject the matriarchal system, polyandry and half-nakedness of women that the ‘great reformer’ Tipu Sultan tried to honour the entire population with Islam.” To the Malabar people, the Muslim harem, Muslim polygamy and the Islamic ritual of circumcision were equally repulsive and opposed to the ancient culture and tradition in Kerala. Tipu Sultan sought a marriage alliance with the matriarchal Muslim family of Arackal Bibi in Cannanore. Kozhikode was then a centre of Brahmins and had over 7000 Brahmin families living there. Over 2000 Brahmin families perished as a result of Tipu Sultan’s Islamic cruelties. He did not spare even women and children. Most of the men escaped to forests and foreign lands.

Elamkulam Kunjan Pillai wrote in the Mathrubhoomi Weekly of December 25, 1955: “Muhammadans greatly increased in number. Hindus were forcibly circumcised in thousands. As a result of Tipu’s atrocities, strength of Nairs and Chamars (Scheduled Castes) significantly diminished in number. Namboodiris also substantially decreased in number.”

 

The German missionary Guntest has recorded: ‘Accompanied by an army of 60,000, Tipu Sultan came to Kozhikode in 1788 and razed it to the ground. It is not possible even to describe the brutalities committed by that Islamic barbarian from Mysore .” C.A. Parkhurst also noted that ‘Almost the entire Kozhikode was razed to the ground.”

 

TEMPLES DESTROYED

Thali, Thiruvannur, Varackal, Puthur, Govindapuram, Thalikkunnu and other important temples in the town of Kozhikode as well as those nearby were completely destroyed as a result of Tipu’s military operations. Some of them were reconstructed by the Zamorin after he returned following the defeat of Tipu Sultan in Sreerangapatanam and the Treaty of 1792.

The devastation caused by Tipu Sultan to the ancient and holy temples of Keraladheeswaram, Thrikkandiyoor and Thriprangatu in Vettum region was terrible. The Zamorin renovated these temples to some extent. The famous and ancient Thirunavaya Temple , known throughout the country as an ancient teaching-centre of the Vedas, revered by the devotees of Vishnu from Tamil Nadu, and existing before the advent of Christ, was also plundered and destroyed by Tipu’s army (Malabar Gazetteer). After dismantling and destroying the idol, Tipu converted the Thrikkavu Temple into an ammunition depot in Ponnani (Malabar Manual). It was the Zamorin who repaired the temple later. Kotikkunnu, Thrithala, Panniyoor and other family temples of the Zamorin were plundered and destroyed. The famous Sukapuram Temple was also desecrated. Damage done to the Perumparampu Temple and Maranelira Temple of Azhvancherry Thamprakkal (titular head of all Namboodiri Brahmins) in Edappadu, can be seen even today. Vengari Temple and Thrikkulam Temple in Eranadu, Azhinjillam Temple in Ramanattukara, Indyannur Temple, Mannur Temple and many other temples were defiled and damaged extensively during the military regime.

 

Tipu Sultan reached Guruvayoor Temple only after destroying Mammiyoor Temple and Palayur Christian Church. If the destruction caused by Tipu’s army is not visible today in the Guruvayoor Temple , it is mainly because of the intervention of Hydrose Kutty who had been converted to Islam by Hyder Ali Khan. He secured the safety of the temple and the continuation of land-tax exemption allowed by Hyder Ali earlier, besides the renovation and repairs done by the devotees later. According to available evidences, fearing the wrath of Tipu Sultan, the sacred idol of the Guruvayoor Temple was removed to the Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple in Travancore State . It was only after the end of Tipu’s military regime, that the idol was ceremoniously reinstated in the Guruvayoor Temple itself. Even today, daily pujas are conducted in Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple where the idol of Guruvayoor Temple was temporarily installed and worshipped.

 

Damages caused to the nearby temples at Parampathali, Panmayanadu and Vengidangu are visible even today. The deplorable state of the architecture of the sanctum sanctorum of Parampathali Temple destroyed during the military operations of Tipu Sultan is really heart-rending. The atrocities committed in Kozhikode during the nightmarish days of the military occupation are vividly described in the works of Fra Bartolomaeo who had travelled through Kerala at that time. How cruelly Tipu Sultan, ably assisted by the French Commander M. Lally, had treated the Hindu and Christian population can be clearly understood from his writings.

 

TALKING RECORDS OF KERALA HISTORY

Govinda Pillai says in his famous book, History of Literature; “During Malayalam Era 965 corresponding to 1789-90, Tipu Sultan crossed over to Malabar with an army of uncivilised barbarians. With a sort of fanatical love for Islamic faith, he destroyed many Hindu temples and Christian churches which were the custodians of precious wealth and religious traditions. Besides, Tipu Sultan abducted hundreds of people and forcibly circumcised and converted them to Islam – an act which was considered by them as more than death.”

A small army of 2000 Nairs of Kadathanadu resisted the invasion of the huge army of Tipu Sultan from a fortress in Kuttipuram for a few weeks. They were reduced to starvation and death. Tipu Sultan entered the fort and offered to spare their lives, provided they accepted conversion to Islam. The unfortunate lot of 2000 Nairs were then forced to eat beef after being converted to Islamic faith, at the end of usual religious ritual of mass circumcision. All the members of one branch of Parappanad Royal Family were forcibly converted to Muhammadan faith except for one or two who escaped from the clutches of Tipu Sultan’s army. Similarly, one Thiruppad belonging to Nilamboor Royal Family was also forcibly abducted and converted to Islam. Thereafter, it was reported that further conversions of Hindus were attempted through those converts. In the end, when the Kolathiri Raja surrendered and paid tribute, Tipu Sultan got him treacherously killed without any specific reason, dragged his dead body tied to the feet of an elephant through the streets, and finally hanged him from a tree-top to show his Islamic contempt for Hindu Rajas.

 

It may be mentioned here that the entire Wodayar Royal Family of Mysore had been humiliated and kept in prison by Hyder Ali Khan and Tipu Sultan in their capital city, Sreerangapatanam. Even the Palghat Raja, Ettipangi Achan who had surrendered, was imprisoned on suspicion and later taken to Sreerangapatanam. Nothing was heard of him subsequently. Christians in Palghat fled out of fear. Tipu Sultan terrified the entire Hindu population in Malabar, stationing his army contingents in different regions for the purpose. The tax initially imposed by Hyder Ali Khan was forcibly collected by Tipu Sultan. Standing crops were confiscated. This act provoked even some influential Mappila landlords to revolt against Tipu Sultan.

 

Hyder Ali Khan had exempted temples from the payment of land tax. But Tipu Sultan forced the temples to pay heavy taxes. The famous Hemambika Temple at Kalpathi of the Palghat Raja who had surrendered to Hyder Ali Khan, the Kachamkurissi Temple of the Kollamkottu Raja who had deserted the Zamorin and sided with Hyder Ali Khan, and also the Jain Temple at Palghat suffered serious damages due to the cruel policies of Tipu Sultan.

 

Many Nair and Brahmin landlords fled the country leaving their vast wealth behind. The Mappilas forcibly took possession of their lands and wealth. Tipu Sultan did not object to their actions. Most of the Mappila landlords of today claim that they purchased the ownership of the landed properties from Nairs and Brahmins after paying heavy compensation. These blatant lies are being repeated by them in spite of the fact that practically nothing was paid to the Hindu landlords then or later. (The same Islamic treachery was repeated during the Mappila riots of 1921.)

 

In any case, Tipu Sultan succeeded in mass killing, converting lakhs of Hindus to Islamic faith, driving thousands out of their traditional homes, and finally making the rest extremely poor. Many Hindus belonging to lower castes accepted conversion to Islam under duress. However, many others, especially the Thiyyas, fled to Tellicherry and Mahe for safety.

 

When the British established their rule in Malabar and the Hindu landlords made efforts to recover their landed properties, illegally occupied by the local Mappilas, Mullahs started preaching to their fanatic followers that “killing of Hindu landlords was a sacred Islamic act,” leading to frequent Mappila outrages in Malabar.1

 

In Cherunad, Vettathunad, Eranad, Valluvanad, Thamarassery and other interior areas, local Mappilas unleashed a reign of terror on the Hindu population, mainly to retain the illegally occupied land and to establish their domination over Hindus as during Tipu’s regime. Fearing the organised robberies and violence, people could not even travel freely in the Malabar hinterland of predominantly Mappila population.

 

Lt. Col. E. Phitiyan, Andriansi, Mayan, K.P. Padmanabha Menon Sadasyathilakan T.K. Velu Pillai, Ullur Parameshwara Iyer, and other prominent people have described vividly the various types of atrocities committed by Tipu Sultan during the days of his Islamic rule in Malabar. There is no count of the wealth looted from Hindu temples and taken away by him to Sreerangapatanam.

 

It is, therefore, very pitiable that a few shameless Hindus of today have come forward to orchestrate the nefarious propaganda of the fanatic Muslims, namely, that it was the imperialist divide-and-rule policy of the British that was responsible for blaming the Muslims for various atrocities committed against Hindus. This Big Lie was surreptitiously entered subsequently in history books and related records. It is obvious that these “Hindus” are speaking on the theme of Hindu-Muslim unity and praising the ‘secular’ credentials of the Muslim League, Tipu Sultan and Aurangzeb to the sky, not sincerely for the sake of Hindu-Muslim amity but only because of their inherent cowardice. They even proclaim that the notorious Mappila outrage of 1921 was part of the freedom struggle!

 

CONCLUSION

A few observations about the attack of Tipu Sultan on the Travancore State would be appropriate in this context. If the Nedunkotta had not been constructed earlier mainly to stop the danger from the powerful Zamorin, the same fate would have befallen the helpless Travancore State as well. Because of the above fortification, Tipu Sultan could wreak vengeance only in Angamally, Alwaye, Varapuzha, Alangod and other towns on the northern borders of Travancore State . That is what the Dewan of Travancore, Madhava Rao, had written in the history of Travancore. It may be emphasized here that he had relied on the original local records, not the ones published by the European historians. He wrote: “Whatever cruelties, the local Mappilas were desirous of indulging in the land, Tipu Sultan and his army of Muslim converts did. The ancient and holy temples were heartlessly defiled or burnt down. The ruins of those temples destroyed by Tipu’s fanatic army are the existing evidences of the atrocities committed by Muslims in the country. Christian churches also had to suffer widespread destructions. However, Tipu Sultan spared only the territories of Cochin Raja who had surrendered to Hyder Ali Khan in the beginning itself. Still, when Tipu Sultan and his army entered Parur and started firing at Kodungallur, the Cochin Raja sent a letter to the Travancore Raja requesting him ‘to protect me and my family’.” (A copy of the original letter was also published in the book.)

 

These are the recorded facts about the atrocities unleashed by Tipu Sultan during his military regime notoriously known as Padayottakalam. Poets have written a number of poems about the sufferings of the people and the land during those nightmarish days. The following was written by a member of the Katathanad Royal Family about the consequences of Padayottakalam:

 

“Oh Shiva! Shiva Lingam (idol) has gone (destroyed) from the temple, and also the Lingam (manliness) from the land:” (This is the English translation of the Malayalam article by P.C.N. Raja first published in Kesari Annual of 1964. The late Raja was a senior member of the Zamorin Royal Family.)

TIPU’S OWN TESTIMONY

“If you love me, should you not put up with my weakness sometimes?” – Tipu Sultan is purported to have asked Mir Sadik who was one of his ministers. This is a remark invented by Bhagwan S. Gidwani in his controversial novel, The Sword of Tipu Sultan.

Across-section of the new generation of historians and novelists is of the opinion that all the available documents and history books on Tipu Sultan originate from the British and, therefore, they cannot be relied upon, the ostensible policy of the British being to ‘divide and rule’. Pointing to the correspondence between Shrimad Paramahamsa Parivrajakacharya Shri Sankaracharya of Sringeri Mutt and Tipu Sultan during 1791-92 and 1798, they argue that Tipu was an apostle of secularism and as such respected Hindu religious heads and places of worship. Tipu is also identified as among the first nationalists who fought against the British to liberate the country.

 

However, the arguments fall apart if one goes through various letters and edicts issued by Tipu Sultan to various public functionaries, including his principal military commanders, the governors of forts and provinces, and diplomatic and commercial agents.

 

William Kirkpatrick, who compiled many of Tipu’s letters, writes in his book, Selected Letters of Tipoo Sultan (published in 1811): “Tipoo knew his will to be a law the propriety of which… would never be questioned or doubted by any of his slaves… He probably measured the sentiments in question by a different standard from that with which we estimate them. Thus the various murders and acts of treachery which we see him directing to be carried into execution, were not criminal, but on the contrary just, and even meritorious, in his eyes.”

 

GREAT VICTORY

Kirkpatrick continues: “The Koran taught him that it was not necessary to keep faith with infidels, or the enemies of the true religion, in which case it was not difficult for him to persuade himself that it was right to include all who opposed or refused to cooperate in his views for the extension of that religion; or, in other words, for his own aggrandisement. “

 

This observation of Kirkpatrick is found to be valid when one goes through the letter of January 19, 1790, sent to Budruz Zuman Khan by Tipu himself. It says: “Don’t you know I have achieved a great victory recently in Malabar and over four lakh Hindus were converted to Islam? I am determined to march against that cursed ‘Raman Nair’ very soon (reference is to Rama Varma Raja of Travancore State who was popularly known as Dharma Raja). Since I am overjoyed at the prospect of converting him and his subjects to Islam, I have happily abandoned the idea of going back to Srirangapatanam now” (K.M. Panicker, Bhasha Poshini, August, 1923).

 

In a letter dated 8th Eezidy (February 13, 1790) addressed to Budruz Zuman Khan, Tipu writes: “Your two letters, with the enclosed memorandums of the Naimar (or Nair) captives, have been received. You did right in ordering a hundred and thirty-five of them to be circumcised, and in putting eleven of the youngest of these into the Usud Ilhye band (or class) and the remaining ninety-four into the Ahmedy Troop, consigning the whole, at the same time, to the charge of the Kilaaddar of Nugr…” (Selected Letters of Tipoo Sultan by Kirkpatrick) .

 

In a letter dated January 18, 1790 to Syed Abdul Dulai, Tipu writes: “With the grace of Prophet Mohammed and Allah, almost all Hindus in Calicut are converted to Islam. Only on the borders of Cochin State a few are still not converted. I am determined to convert them also very soon. I consider this as Jehad to achieve that object” (K.M. Panicker, Bhasha Poshini).

 

THEY SPEAK VOLUMES

The translation of the great seal of Tipu found in Major Alex Dirom’s comprehensive account of the Third Mysore War published as early as 1793 in London , reads as follows:

“I am the Messenger of the true faith.
“I bring Unto you the Edicts of Truth.

“From CONQUEST and the Protection of the Royal Hyder comes my tide of SULTAN and the world under the Sun and Moon is subject to my Signet.”

The letters and the seal speak volumes of the mind of the man who wantonly roamed and terrorised South India and the southeastern borders of Maharashtra for a decade. It cannot be said that he did so because the Hindus were assisting the British.

 

The contention of a secularist section of historians and novelists that Tipu was a patriot since he fought the British, has no validity. The renowned historian, Dr. I.M. Muthanna, says in his Tipu Sultan X-Rayed that Tipu was a traitor as he invited the French to invade India . The letter, dated April 21, 1797, written by Tipu and classified as No. 4 in the Persian File of Records, and quoted by Muthanna in his book, reads:

“Citizen Representatives:

“Since I manifested my friendship in writing to you, my messengers have arrived with the following intelligence which will not be displeasing to you.

 

“The Nizam, an ally of the English, and the Chief of the Mughals, is very ill and his age leaves no prospect of his recovery. He has four children who are disputing the right of succession. One of them is much attached to me, (he) is the favourite of the chiefs of the people and is expected to succeed him.

 

“I inform these events in order to prove to you that it is now the moment for you to invade India . With little trouble we shall drive the British out of India . Rely on my friendship.

“Your ally (Sd) Tipu Sultan.”

That was Tipu’s expression of love for India !

The world-famous Protuguese traveller, Fr. Barthoelomeo, not a Britisher, writes in his book Voyage to East Indies : “First a corps of 30,000 barbarians who butchered everybody on the way… followed by the field-gun unit under the French Commander, M. Lally… Tipu was riding on an elephant behind which another army of 30,000 soldiers followed. Most of the men and women were hanged in Calicut , first mothers were hanged with their children tied to necks of mothers. That barbarian Tipu Sultan tied the naked Christians and Hindus to the legs of elephants and made the elephants to move around till the bodies of the helpless victims were torn to pieces. Temples and churches were ordered to be burned down, desecrated and destroyed. Christian and Hindu women were forced to marry Mohammadans and similarly their men were forced to marry Mohammadan women.1 Those Christians who refused to be honoured with Islam, were ordered to be killed by hanging immediately. These atrocities were told to me by the victims of Tipu Sultan who escaped from the clutches of his army and reached Varappuzha, which is the centre of Carmichael Christian Mission. I myself helped many victims to cross the Varappuzha river by boats.”

 

COW-SLAUGHTER

“The Padayottam military occupation period won’t be forgotten by the Malayalis for generations. It was this invasion, between Malayalam era 957 to 967 (1782 to 1792) that turned Malayalam upside down,” says P. Raman Menon, biographer of Shaktan Tampuran, the King of Cochin during Tipu’s invasion. He adds: “There was hardly any cowshed left in Malayalam where the Mysore Tiger did not enter.” The reference is to the mass cow-slaughter carried out by Tipu’s army on his orders.

 

In 1783-84, 1788 and 1789-90, Tipu personally led the attacks on Malayalam (Kerala), besides sending his army contingents to various resistance spots during the intervening period. Well-known Muslim historian, P.S. Syed Muhammed, author of Kerala Muslim Charitram (History of Kerala Muslims), has this to say about these invasions: “What happened to Kerala because of Tipu’s invasion, reminds one of the invasion of Chengez Khan and Timur in Indian history.”

 

Vadakunkur Raja Raja Varma writes in Kerala Samskrita Sahitya Charitram (History of Sanskrit Literature in Kerala): “The number of temples destroyed during Tipu’s invasion is countless. It was the hobby of Tipu and his army to put the temples on fire destroy the idols and indulge in cow-slaughter. The memory of destruction of the Talipparampu and Trichambaram temples aches the heart.”

 

According to the Malabar Gazetteer, the important temples in the towns of Tali, Srivaliyanatukavu, Tiruvannur, Varakkal, Puthur, Govindapuram, and Talikunnu were destroyed by Tipu’s ravaging armies. Even the Tirunavaya Temple known all over India as a centre of Rig Veda teaching was destroyed. Tipu personally ordered the destruction of Calicut which was the capital of the Zamorin Rajas.

 

The record books maintained at the Vadakumnatha Temple of Trichur, Zamorins of Calicut by K.V. Krishna Iyer, and Malabar Manual by William Logan also list hundreds of temples destroyed during Tipu’s invasion.

 

FAITH IN ASTROLOGY

It is common knowledge that Tipu had immense faith in astrology. He used to keep a number of astrologers in his court who were asked to calculate the time auspicious for his invasions. It was at the appeals of these astrologers and his own mother that Tipu spared two temples out of more than a dozen within Srirangapatanam Fort. Moreover, by the end of 1790, Tipu was facing enemies from all sides. He was also defeated at the Travancore Defence Lines. It was then that in order to appease the Hindus of Mysore, he started giving land-grants to Hindu temples.

 

This view finds endorsement in the biography of the Diwan of Travancore, Life History of Raja Kesavadas by V,R. Parameswaran Pillai. Pillai writes: “With respect to the much-published land-grants I had explained the reasons about 40 years back. Tipu had immense faith in astrological predictions. It was to become an Emperor (Padushah) after destroying the might of the British that Tipu resorted to land-grants and other donations to Hindu temples in Mysore including Sringeri Mutt, as per the advice of the local Brahmin astrologers. Most of these were done after his defeat in 1791 and the humiliating Srirangapatanam Treaty in 1792. These grants were not done out of respect or love for Hindus or Hindu religion but for becoming Padushah as predicted by the astrologers. ”

Sanjay Khan, producer of the controversial TV serial on Tipu, contended in the beginning that there was no distortion in his serial (based on Gidwani’s novel). He has now admitted in an interview to The Week that “Gidwani’s novel may not be historically correct”.- Indian Express ( Bombay ), March 10, 1990

How America could Save a Lot of Money and Freedom

A Suggestion

 

I suggest that America fight the Islamic terrorism by addressing the root cause of the terrorism – Islam – by large scale educational and social programs, and make America free from Islam in 25-50 years by non-violent and civil means.

 

Compared to the current two wars, this will cost a lot less and no lives, and reduce the possibility of future wars like our current wars. The greatest benefit would be that America will maintain its freedom and culture without any fear of Islam taking over the country. Below I am describing why and how.

 

Please ponder over the suggestion and ideas I shared here after reading this whole document. If you like it, please share it with all kafir Americans you know. If you do not like it, or do not believe in what I said, please do not trash it, but send it to those who possibly could use it, and let them decide if to trash it or not.

 

We must give up talking only the “politically correct” because then we are not talking the truth and facts. That makes it impossible to figure effective solutions to our problems, and it deludes others from the reality.

 

I have no doubt about the great value of this suggestion.

Islam is not tolerant of any other faith. Islam/Koran does not approve any democratic government. All the Muslims have alliance with only the Islam, not with the country they live in or are born in. Koran teaches them to lie with the kafirs in order to serve Islam interests. This is called taquia in Koran.  The so called moderate Muslims sooner or later are the beneficiaries of the Islamic terrorism acts. They gradually attain political power to push a kafir country under Islam. There is no separation of church and state in Islam. The five attachments to this document are in support of what I am saying.

 

I am sure the Homeland Security Dept, FBI, and CIA are spending a lot of effort and $s to keep an eye on many so called moderates in USA and abroad. This money and efforts could be saved by enacting proper laws. The screening at the airports could also become easy and less costly.

 

Additionally, we are fighting two wars, but we are fighting the symptoms of Islamic terrorism. America’s war efforts are not addressing the root cause of the terrorism – Islam. We need to fight this ideology by large scale educational and social programs. I am very confident that any kafir country can purge out Islam in 25-50 years. The cost of the social and educational programs will be a lot less than the cost of wars we are fighting, and we will save a lot of war expenses in future as there will be less need for such wars.

 

Religions and Religious Freedom

A Rational Discussion to understand the Truth

 

There is a flow in the law and there is some misunderstanding. Let me explain it.

 

At this time the world has a small number of religions, and the major religions are: Christianity, Islam, Hindu, and Buddhism. The followers of no religion, except the Hindus, say that all religions are same.

 

[(Most Hindus think that “all religions are same” out of misunderstanding of a line in the Vedas that says all paths lead to the same god. They forget that when the Vedas said it (in the beginning of creation) there was only one religion – the Vedic dharma – in the world. This Vedic dharma gives a number of yogas – processes of realizing god or going to god and experience bliss.  All these Vedic paths lead to the same god. Therefore the words “all paths” of the Vedas do not include Islam and Christianity, or Semitic religions.]

 

When one understands that all religions are different from each other, then one may ask – which religion is good, better, or best? This question immediately raises another question – how you figure if a religion is better than another religion? Here is how you could figure it:

 

A religion is better than another religion when:

 

  1. It gives more freedom of thought, speech and action. Islam does not give freedom.

 

  1. It is tolerant of all the tolerant religions. An intolerant religion is one that that does not accept the existence of any competing faith, and makes organized efforts to convert the infidels. (Islam is not tolerant. Tolerating intolerant is encouraging intolerance.)

 

  1. Its practice does not take away, or curtail, or limit the freedom, lives, lands, or property, pursuit for happiness, or dignity and honor of the followers of other tolerant religions. (Islam tells to convert the kafirs or kill them if they refuse to accept Islam.)

 

  1. Its practice is eco friendly and harmonious with nature.

 

  1. It does not encourage animal killings for fun. (Islam does not prohibit animal killing.)

 

  1. Its practice makes one compassionate to other living beings. (Islam does not teach compassion.)

 

  1. People accept it by free choice without any force, pressure or enticement for conversion. (Islam spreads only by force on their many children, wives, and others. There is hardly any case where one willingly accepts Islam.)

 

  1. Its followers do not go out to convert anyone. They preach only to those who have friendly and non-envious interest to know it.

 

  1. It is more scientific or logical than another religion. (There is nothing scientific in Koran.)

 

  1. It does not say, “Follow this religion, or you will go to hell.”

 

  1. It does not say, “Kill those who quit this religion.” (Islam says so.)

 

  1. It does not say, “Women cannot go to heaven.” (Islam says so.)

 

  1. It does not say one race or sex is superior to another. (Koran says that only the Islam is true religion.)

 

  1. It is for all the humans of all the time. It is not exclusive for a particular race, or country or group. (Islam spreads barbaric Arab imperialism.)

 

  1. It says that any human is free to follow any process of the religion and achieve its final destination or goal. Islam does not say it. (Koran says that if one quits Islam, he/she must be killed.)

 

  1. It does not approve slavery, sex out of marriage, gambling, or intoxication. (Islam approves sex out of marriage. It allows very temporary marriage for sex.)

 

  1. Its practice helps in achieving peace at any level. It has more likelihood of achieving peace. (Islam’s whole 1400 year bloody history shows that wherever Islam goes – mostly by force – peace goes away.)

 

With the above criteria one could compare religion A with religion B. Then a better of the two religions could be compared with religion C, and so forth. Using this process you will find that some religions are not good, and at least one – Islam – is really worst or barbaric.

 

You have to know about a religion only by its Book, and from its well recognized authorities, and staunch followers. Every religion has more or less followers who do not know their own religion correctly, or they malpractice it. So, the religion is what is stated in its authorized Book.

 

Now, most democratic counties at this time (except Hamas perhaps) give freedom of religion. They say, “Anyone can follow any religion. All religions are legal. Government does not prefer one religion over another.” This law basically says that you could follow a good religion or a bad religion.

 

Now think. Is it rational, or safe, to say that you living in a democratic country could follow a religion that says: “Any democratic government is illegal and must be replaced; or, you kill the followers of other religions, and doing so you will go heaven; or, accept this religion, or else you will go to hell or will be killed; or, no woman could go out of home without fully covering her body from head to toe; or, no woman could go to schools, etc.? It certainly is not rational.

 

Therefore, the law or constitution needs to be amended to say that any intolerant religion is illegal. If you are living in a democracy, and not following a barbaric religion, and your country’s majority people are not following a barbaric religion, then please tell the majority to unite and change the law or constitution as soon as possible before the barbarians could take over your country.

 

No democratic constitution should allow a barbaric and intolerant or anti-democracy religion. The kafir Americans (who are majority at this time) do not want to see America converted into a Muslim country. They do not want Islamic Sharia law (that says you are guilty when accused) in America.

 

Keep in mind the alarming fact that the kafir population growth rate in USA and Europe is very less (one fourth) compared to Muslim growth rate; and democracy is a game of number of votes. Once Islam take over by vote, the democracy will vanish and Sharia will take over.

 

Therefore, Islam needs to be declared illegal. Most Americans will reject this idea saying that the constitution provides freedom of religion. This is because they have not analyzed the issue thoroughly. I already explained above that Islam is not worthy of freedom in America. Below is more rationale.

When the forefathers of America drafted the constitution, they did not have slightest idea that Islam could be a threat to USA. They thought all religions are good, and now we know that it is not true. Therefore, we need to amend the constitution declaring Islam illegal. “The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people; it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government.” – Alexander Hamilton, Aug 28, 1794

Additionally, all the Muslim countries have all the religions illegal, except Islam. You cannot pray to Jesus in Saudi Arabia e.g. Therefore, all the kafir countries and USA should have no problem – i.e. no other country will complain or criticize – in declaring Islam illegal. Relationship with non-Muslims

     PROTOCOL AND IDEOLOGY OF PAKISTAN

 

1.  Islam is the only right religion on the earth; all other religions are wrong. Non-Muslims are on the path of error.

 

2.  It is the prime religious duty of every Muslim to convert all non-Muslims to Islam. This effort has to be continuous and nonstop. This continuous and nonstop effort is variously called ROAD TO HEAVEN. Muslim struggle for peace and justice, Jihad, etc.

 

3. There are three stages for bringing peace and justice on this earth:

(a) Advice and inducements to non-Muslims to get converted to Islam

or at least to work for or under Islam;

    (b) Creation of an atmosphere of psychological demoralization and confusion in the minds of non-Muslims;

(c) Military attack on non-Muslims.

 

The stage (b) mentioned above is the most important one, to be employed on a large scale in dealing with communities which are not likely to be converted to Islam on a mass scale at one time. It is preparatory to military attack when such attacks become necessary. If this psychological warfare is made in an intelligent and planned manner, the final conflict may be won even without a military attack. If, however, a military onslaught becomes imperative, a very good ground for military success would have been prepared through such preparatory, psychological demoralization.

 

   THIS PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE INCLUDES: “TERRORISM” AND “TREACHERY”.

 

Attack on non-Muslims is advised when they least suspect it, such as on their religious holy days, on Yom Kippur or on Sundays if the victims would-be Christians. They are to be attacked when they are at play or at sleep, when they are most vulnerable.

 

“When ye Muslims attack! Create terror in the hearts of

non-Muslims; Rob; Burn; Slaughter on mass scale so as to teach the survivors what awaits them if they do not surrender to Islam.”

 

If non-Muslims are prepared for truce, Muslims must impose conditions so as to achieve their conversion to Islam smoothly at a future date. During this period of truce, the non-Muslims are to live as second-class citizens under Muslim rule, paying special taxes for the privilege of living under Muslim ‘protection’.

 

When stage (c) comes and a war is declared, all Muslims, even the Muslim citizens of the invaded country are to support the invader, the Muslim attackers from outside and against the interest of the country of residence. Islam does not recognize any nationality other than Islamic identity.

 

If the Geneva Convention or any other Convention does not suit them, the Muslims must quote Islamic Law, which comes directly from Allah, the Muslim god and therefore supreme to every Muslim and superior to all other earthly laws made by non-Muslims men. The same holds good in the case of United Nations Declaration of Human Rights.

 

Not one word of the Quran can be changed ever doubts cast on its contents and validity at any time and place. Punishment for such questioning is:

Stage by stage, march against the non-Muslims, hit them, offer them terms of peace, demoralize them, terrorize them ceaselessly in various forms, open or deceitful, infiltrate and create total confusion in the camp of non-Muslims. Then attack, and attack ruthlessly, as commanded by the holy Prophet in the holy Quran, slaughtering entire non-Muslim communities including their womenfolk and children.

 

 “Ye march ruthlessly ceaselessly till the conquest is complete and there is left no non-Muslim on this earth, till  everyone obeys Shariat, law of Islam.”  

 

No disobedience is tolerated inside Muslim territory. Slaughter the dissidents such that others shall not dare to raise voice of protest against a Muslim ruler. Carry on till there is strict observation of Islamic Law and Islamic Justice on the whole world.

Peace is taboo in Islam. (Koran 2:216). Allah commands, “Fight until persecution, which is worse than slaughter, (Koran, 2:191) is no more and religion is all for Allah.” (Koran 8:39) Those Muslims who did not adopt crusade (Jihad) and observed peace have been consigned by Allah to their grave hell, since the inception of Islam. They would bear the punishment till Qayamat i.e the Day of Judgment. However, those who plundered, murdered, raped women of non-Muslims, became Ghazi if survived and secured instant supreme heaven (Firdaus) if slain. Allah is fraud. Allah promises heaven but consigns Muslims in hell till The Day of Judgment.

For 15 years, from the mid 1970s to 1990, I worked in Detroit, Michigan. I watched it descend into the abyss of crime, debauchery, gun play, drugs, school truancy, car-jacking, gangs and human depravity. I watched entire city blocks burned out. I watched graffiti explode on buildings, cars, trucks, buses and school yards. Trash everywhere! Detroiters walked through it, tossed more into it and ignored it.

Tens of thousands and then, hundreds of thousands today exist on federal welfare, free housing and food stamps! With Aid to Dependent Children, minority women birthed eight to 10 and in once case, one woman birthed 24 kids as reported by the Detroit Free Press—all on American taxpayer dollarss. A new child meant a new car payment, new TV and whatever mom wanted. I saw Lyndon Baines Johnson’s “Great Society” flourish in Detroit. If you give money for doing nothing, you will get more hands out taking money for doing nothing.

Mayor Coleman Young, perhaps the most corrupt mayor in America, outside of Richard Daley in Chicago, rode Detroit down to its knees. He set the benchmark for cronyism, incompetence and arrogance. As a black man, he said, “I am the MFIC.” The IC meant ‘in charge’. You can figure out the rest. Detroit became a majority black city with 67 percent African-Americans.

As a United Van Lines truck driver for my summer job from teaching math and science, I loaded hundreds of American families into my van for a new life in another city or state. Detroit plummeted from 1.8 million citizens to 912,000 today. At the same time, legal and illegal immigrants converged on the city, so much so, that Muslims number over 300,000. Mexicans number 400,000 throughout Michigan, but most work in Detroit.

As the Muslims moved in, the whites moved out. As the crimes became more violent, the whites fled. Finally, unlawful Mexicans moved in at a torrid pace. You could cut the racial tension in the air with a knife! Detroit may be one our best examples of multiculturalism: pure dislike and total separation from America.

Today, you hear Muslim calls to worship over the city like a new American Baghdad with hundreds of Islamic mosques in Michigan, paid for by Saudi Arabia oil money. High school flunk out rates reached 76 percent last June according to NBC’s Brian Williams. Classrooms resemble more foreign countries than America. English? Few speak it! The city features a 50 percent illiteracy rate and growing. Unemployment hit 28.9 percent in 2009 as the auto industry vacated the city.

In this week’s Time Magazine October 4, 2009, “The Tragedy of Detroit: How a great city fell and how it can rise again,” I choked on the writer’s description of what happened.

“If Detroit had been savaged by a hurricane and submerged by a ravenous flood, we’d know a lot more about it,” said Daniel Okrent. “If drought and carelessness had spread brush fires across the city, we’d see it on the evening news every night. Earthquake, tornadoes, you name it — if natural disaster had devastated the city that was once the living proof of American prosperity, the rest of the country might take notice. Top of Form

But Detroit, once our fourth largest city, now 11th and slipping rapidly, has had no such luck. Its disaster has long been a slow unwinding that seemed to remove it from the rest of the country. Even the death rattle that in the past year emanated from its signature industry brought more attention to the auto executives than to the people of the city, who had for so long been victimized by their dreadful decision-making.”

As Coleman Young’s corruption brought the city to its knees, no amount of federal dollars could save the incredible payoffs, kick backs and illegality permeating his administration. I witnessed the city’s death from the seat of my 18-wheeler tractor trailer because I moved people out of every sector of decaying Detroit.

“By any quantifiable standard, the city is on life support. Detroit’s treasury is $300 million short of the funds needed to provide the barest municipal services,” Okrent said. “The school system, which six years ago was compelled by the teachers’ union to reject a philanthropist’s offer of $200 million to build 15 small, independent charter high schools, is in receivership. The murder rate is soaring, and 7 out of 10 remain unsolved. Three years after Katrina devastated New Orleans, unemployment in that city hit a peak of 11%. In Detroit, the unemployment rate is 28.9%. That’s worth spelling out: twenty-eight point nine percent.”

At the end of Okrent’s report, and he will write a dozen more about Detroit, he said, “That’s because the story of Detroit is not simply one of a great city’s collapse. It’s also about the erosion of the industries that helped build the country we know today. The ultimate fate of Detroit will reveal much about the character of America in the 21st century. If what was once the most prosperous manufacturing city in the nation has been brought to its knees, what does that say about our recent past? And if it can’t find a way to get up, what does that say about our future?”

As you read in my book review of Chris Steiner’s book, $20 Per Gallon, the auto industry won’t come back. Immigration will keep pouring more and more uneducated third world immigrants from the Middle East into Detroit—thus creating a beachhead for Islamic hegemony in America. If 50 percent illiteracy continues, we will see more homegrown terrorists spawned out of the Muslim ghettos of Detroit. Illiteracy plus Islam equals walking human bombs. You have already seen it in the Madrid, Spain, London, England and Paris, France with train bombings, subway bombings and riots. As their numbers grow, so will their power to enact their barbaric Sharia Law that negates republican forms of government, first amendment rights and subjugates women to the lowest rungs on the human ladder. We will see more honor killings by upset husbands, fathers and brothers that demand subjugation by their daughters, sisters and wives. Muslims prefer beheadings of women to scare the hell out of any other members of their sect from straying.

In India, we tend to forget the crimes committed against humanity by either the British or the Muslim rulers before them or the Muslim League and its child Pakistan. History books of India hardly mention that in 1943 at least 5 million people in Bengal were forced to starve to death by the British. There are no accounts of how many millions were slaughtered by the Muslim League guided by Jinnah during 1946 to 1948 and subsequently in Pakistan. India has pressed no charges against Yhahiya Khan and Tikka Khan, who have killed at least 3 million people, almost all Hindus, in East Pakistan in 1970.

 

Some politicians like LK Advani and Jaswant Singh are determined to prove Jinnah”s claim to so-called secularism. They ignored the crimes committed by Jinnah but only cited the speech he made on August 11, 1947 in the Constituent Assembly in front of Lord Mountbatten for the British elite, gathered there. In that speech, Jinnah said that in a future Pakistan, everyone would be treated equally irrespective of their religion and non-Muslims would be free to practice their respective religions in Pakistan. Does that speech make Jinnah a “secularist”? Hitler himself has killed a Jew or Russian. Does that Hitler was a peace-loving German nationalist? It is sadder that both Advani and Jaswant Singh pretend to be leaders of a patriotic nationalist party called BJP but they are following Pakistani historian Ayesha Jalal and a very anti-Indian American historian Stanley Wolpert, who have glorified Jinnah in their recent books.

 

Definition of Secularism

 

Secularism is defined in Webster”s Dictionary as: “A system of doctrines and practices that rejects any form of religious faith and worship” or ” the belief that religion and ecclesiastical affairs should not enter into the function of the State, especially into public education.” The Oxford English Dictionary states that secularism is the doctrine in which morality should be based solely with regard to the well being of mankind in the present life to the exclusion of all considerations drawn from belief in God or in a future State.

 

George Holyoake and Charles Bradlaugh were two leading secularists and atheists of England in the 19th century, from whom we have obtained the word “secularism”. According to Holyoake, secularism maintains the sufficiency of secular reason for guidance in human duties. Secularism also includes the utilitarian rule that makes the good of others the law of duty.

 

Equal treatment of people of different religions or equal respect for all religions is not secularism, as it implies the affairs of the State must not be influenced by any religious or moral considerations at all. The State must adhere to the strict code of “rationality”, which means maximization of its utility, irrespective of moral or religious codes.

 

Jinnah, had devoted his life to create a nation only for the Muslims out of the Indian subcontinent, Islam was the guiding force, and the ideology of that newly created nation Pakistan. Thus, he cannot be called secular at all.

 

Muslims and Secularism

 

Secularism finds no support in Islam. According to Islam, what Mohammed spoke is law that controls everything in the universe. This is a system of life that has been responsible for the creation of everything existing in it and their continuity.

 

“God can guide you to the Truth. Who is more worthy to be followed: He that can guide to the Truth, or He that cannot and is Himself in need of guidance? What has come over you that you so judge?” (The Koran, 10:35) “He that fights for God”s cause fights for himself. God needs no man”s help” (The Koran, 29:6).

 

Rule of Allah (Shariah) is compulsory and stipulates basic laws and regulations that cannot be changed. Some of these laws are concerned with the acts of worship, the relations between men and women, etc. What is the position of secularism with regard to these laws? Secularism makes adultery lawful if both the male and the female are consenting partners. Riba or interest on borrowed money is the basis of all financial transactions in secular economies, while the Koran forbids it. As for alcohol, all secular systems permit consumption of alcohol and make sale of it a lawful business.

 

Secularism is based on keeping religion separate from all affairs of the life and hence, it rules by law and regulations other than Allah”s laws. Thus, secularism rejects Allah”s rules without exception and prefers regulations other than Allah”s and his Messengers. For Muslim societies, acceptance of secularism means abandonment of Shariah, denial of divine guidance and rejection of Allah”s injunctions.

 

If someone says Jinnah was a secular, it makes Jinnah anti-Islamic, a non-Muslim and against the ideology of Pakistan. To judge Jinnah, it is essential to examine his activities and motives, which would prove beyond doubt that Jinnah was devoted to the cause of a Muslim nation, not a secular State.

 

Activities of Jinnah

 

Let us look at his early life. Since 1897, Jinnah had been active in Anjuman-i-Islam, the Muslim Bombay”s foremost religious-political body. In 1906, Jinnah opposed the demand for separate electorates, but before long his opposition thawed when he realized that the demand had ” the mandate of the community” of Muslims in India. In 1910, he was elected to the Imperial Council on a reserved Muslim seat.

From then on, he came in close contact with Nadwah, Aligarh and the All India Muslim League (AIML). He was chosen by the AIML to sponsor a Bill on Waqf-alal-Aulad, a problem of deep concern to Muslims since the time of Syed Ahmad Khan.

He joined the AIML formally in October 1913 (although he gave up his membership of the Congress in 1920, opposing Gandhi”s policy to confront the British) and became its president in 1916. One outcome of his efforts was the Congress-Muslim League Lucknow Pact of 1916, which settled the controversial issue of separate electorate for the Muslims, paving the way for the birth of Pakistan in future. Thus, Sorojini Naidu was very wrong to say in 1916 that Jinnah was the symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity, because the Lucknow pact, which was rejected by the Muslim League, very soon afterwards has nothing to do with the communal harmony but to do with communal division.

 

Jinnah was the most westernized political leader in the annals of Indian Islam; no other Muslim political leader could match him in terms of modernity and modern outlook. He was completely at home with the Anglo-Indian society in cosmopolitan Bombay and metropolitan London. During his chequered career, Jinnah encountered an exceedingly large number of leading non-Muslim personalities and a host of British officials more than any other Muslim leader and had the opportunity to interact with them for some four decades. However, during that time, Jinnah married a Zoroastrian girl only after getting her converted to Islam. A great “secularist” Jinnah indeed.

 

For Jinnah, while national freedom for both Hindus and Muslims continued to be the supreme goal, the means adopted to achieve it underwent a dramatic change. His ultimate objective was to ensure political power for Muslims. After 1937, Jinnah developed close friendship with Mohammed Iqbal, the spiritual founder of the concept of Pakistan. Jinnah called Muslims “a nation”, stressing their distinct religion, culture, language, and civilization and calling on them to “live or die as a nation”. He even described the League flag as “the flag of Islam”, arguing, “You cannot separate the Muslim League from Islam”.

 

In an address to the Gaya Muslim League Conference in January 1938, Jinnah began mapping out his new worldview. He said, “When we say “this flag of Islam “, they think we are introducing religion into politics, a fact of which we are proud, Islam gives us a complete code. It is not only religion but it contains laws, philosophy and politics. In fact, it contains everything that matters to man from morning to night.”

 

In his address at the Patna session of the Muslim League (December 26-29, 1938) he declared: “The behaviour of Congress ministers in the six or seven provinces in which they had gained power under the 1935 Act was that they had compelled Muslim children to accept Vande Mataram as their national song though it was idolatrous and a hymn of hate against Muslims.”

 

For Jinnah, “the creation of a State of our own was a means to an end and not the end in itself. The idea was that we should have a State in which we could live and breathe as free men and which we could develop according to our own lights and culture and where principles of Islamic social justice could find free play.”

 

In his historic declaration for Pakistan in the Muslim League Conference in Lahore in 1940, he spelled out his reasons for reaching out towards the “Pakistan” goal arguing that, “Islam and Hinduism…. are not religions in the strict sense of the word, but are… different and distinct social orders”; that “the Hindus and Muslims belong to two different religious philosophies, social customs, literature”; “to two different civilizations”; that they “derive their inspiration from different sources of history… (with) different epics, different heroes, and different episodes.”

 

In his marathon talks with Gandhi in September 1944, Jinnah demanded the constituency for the plebiscite to decide upon the demand for Pakistan that would comprise only the Muslims, and not the entire population of the areas concerned.

 

After Independence, as head of the State he had founded, Jinnah talked in the same strain. He talked of securing

 

(a) “liberty, fraternity and equality as enjoined upon by Islam” (August 25, 1947);

(b) “Islamic democracy, Islamic social justice and the equality of manhood” (February 21, 1948);

(c) “sure foundations of social justice and Islamic socialism which emphasised equality and brotherhood of man” (March 26, 1948);

(d) “the foundations of our democracy on the basis of true Islamic ideals and principles” (August 14, 1948);

(e) “the onward march of renaissance of Islamic culture and ideals” (August 18, 1947).

 

These are very “Secular” acts indeed.

 

He called upon the mammoth Lahore audience in October 30, 1947, to build up “Pakistan as a bulwark of Islam”; to “live up to your traditions and add to it another chapter of glory”, adding, “If we take our inspiration and guidance from the Holy Koran, the final victory, I once again say, will be ours” (October 30, 1947).

 

As for the specific institutions of the new State, he exhorted the armed forces to uphold “the high tradition of Islam and our national banner” (November 8, 1947); and commanded the State Bank research organization to evolve ” banking practices compatible with Islamic ideals of social and economic life” and to “work our destiny in our own way and present to the world an economic system based on the true Islamic concept of equality of manhood and social justice” (July 1, 1948).

 

For Jinnah, “the creation of a State of our own was a means to an end and not the end in itself. The idea was that we should have a State in which we could live and breathe as free men and which we could develop according to our own rights and culture and where principles of Islamic social justice could find free play” (October11, 1947). He told students of Edwards College, “this mighty land has now been brought under a rule which is Islamic, Muslim rule, as a sovereign, independent State” (April 18, 1948). He even described Pakistan as “the premier Islamic State” (February 1948).

 

Jinnah”s broadcast to the people of the United States (February 1948) was in a similar vein: “I do not know what the ultimate shape of this Constitution is going to be, but I am sure that it will be of a democratic type, embodying the essential principles of Islam. Today, they are as applicable in actual life as they were 1,300 years ago. Islam and its idealism have taught us democracy… We have many non-Muslims, Hindus, Christians, and Parsis, but they are all Pakistanis. They will enjoy the same rights and privileges as any other citizens and will play their rightful part in the affairs of Pakistan.”

 

This is the repetition of what Jinnah said on August 11, 1947, which was quoted by many as the proof that Jinnah was “secularist par excellence”, but it is misleading, to say the least. Jinnah had said clearly that he wanted equal treatment of people of all religions within an Islamic State, not in a secular State.

 

While he laid a good deal of stress on Islamic ideals and principles, he ruled out theocracy, saying, “Pakistan is not a theocracy or anything like it. Islam demands from us the tolerance of other creeds.” Technically speaking, theocracy means a government by ordained priests, who wield authority as being specially appointed by those who claim to derive their rights from their sacerdotal position.”

 

Of all of Jinnah´s pronouncements, his August 11, 1947 address has received the greatest attention since the birth of Pakistan, and spawned a good deal of controversy. That address was: “I think we should keep that in front of us as our ideal and you will find that in course of time, Hindus would cease to be Hindus and Muslims would cease to be Muslims, not in the religious sense because that is the personal faith of each individual, but in the political sense as citizens of the State.”

 

Jinnah´s pronouncement was purely a political speech designed to please the gathered British elite of some of the highest ranks, including Lord Mountbatten and to appease the Hindu minorities in Pakistan in order to protect the Muslims from the growing threat of communal violence in India.

 

Partition could be attributed to Jinnah´s personal ambition of becoming the overlord of a part of India, when he knew that he could never be in charge of India as a whole.

A close study of all of Jinnah´s pronouncements during 1934-48, and most of his pronouncements, during the pre-1934 period, shows that the word, ´secular´ (signifying an ideology) does not find mention in any of them, even when confronted with the question, he evaded it, as the following extracts from his July 17, 1947 press conference indicates:

 

Question: Will Pakistan be a secular or theocratic State?

“M.A. Jinnah: “You are asking me a question that is absurd. I do not know what a theocratic State means.”

 

A correspondent suggested that a theocratic State meant a State where only people of a particular religion, for example, Muslims, could be full citizens and non-Muslims would not be full citizens.

 

M.A. Jinnah: “Then it seems to me that what I have already said is like throwing water on a duck´s back (laughter). When you talk of democracy, I am afraid you have not studied Islam. We learned democracy thirteen centuries ago.”

 

Two-Nation Theory and Jinnah

 

Pakistan is the result of the ´Two-Nation Theory´ propagated by Jinnah in the Lahore Conference of the Muslim League in 1940, where Jinnah clearly expressed that the Hindus and the Muslims could not live together in one country as they are of separate nations. Mohammed Iqbal was credited with coming up with the Two-Nation Theory in his speech at Allahabad in 1930 to the Muslim League.

 

“I would like to see the Punjab, North-West Frontier Province, Sind, and Baluchistan amalgamated into a single State. Self-government within the British Empire or without the British Empire, the formation of a consolidated North-West Indian Moslem State appears to me to be the final destiny of the Moslems, at least of North-West India.”

 

Jinnah supported Iqbal´s idea wholly. During 1937-39, several Muslim leaders inspired by Iqbal´s ideas, presented elaborate schemes for partitioning the subcontinent according to Two-Nation Theory. It all culminated in the 1940″s Lahore declaration for the creation of Pakistan.

 

The life of Jinnah and his activities demonstrates very clearly that he was a man driven by the idea of an Islamic State for the Muslims although it would mean destruction of lives of millions.

 

Jinnah and the exchange of population

 

Muslim League leaders, Jinnah included, had long advocated exchange of population between Muslim and non-Muslim India. All those, who advocated the establishment of a Muslim State Pakistan, also advocated, as its necessary corollary, the exchange of population. Rahmat Ali, Syed Adbul Latif, and Jinnah, all of them expressed strong and unmistakable views over the exchange of Muslim and non- Muslin population so as to make the future Muslim state more homogeneous, and to solve the minority problem.

 

In August 14 1946, Jinnah called the Muslims to get Pakistan by swords, while Nehru, Maulana Azad and General Wavell, the then Vice-Roy of India were trying their best to avoid the partition. The result was an organized mass murder of at least 50,000 Hindu and Sikh in Calcutta and in the southern districts of East Bengal, Noakhali and Chittagong in particular. Jinnah had never condemned it but said, referring to the driving out of the Hindus from Noakhali in 1946, that the transfer of population was already in action, and some machinery should be devised for affecting it on a large scale.

 

At a press conference in Karachi on November 25, 1946, Jinnah appealed to the central as well as provincial governments to take up the question of exchange of population between future Pakistan and India, based on religion.

 

The Dawn, then edited by Jinnah himself, in December 3, 1946 published a statement, entitled ´Exchange of population a most practicable solution,´, by Khan Iftikhar Hussain Khan of Mamdot, President of Punjab Muslin League. The Dawn, on December 4, 1946, said the Muslim League demanded exchange of population and Sind Premier, Ghulam Hussain Hidaya-tullah had offered land for the Muslims of northern India. Sir Feroze Khan Noon, who later became the Prime Minister of Pakistan, while addressing the Muslim League legislators in Patna, had gone to the extent of threatening re-enactment of the murderous orgies of Chengiz Khan and Halagu Khan if non-Muslims did not agree to an exchange of population. Shaukat Hayat Khan, son of the famous Sir Sikander Hayat Khan, had also given out threats to support transfer of population.

 

Post-Partition Pakistan rapidly exercised its terror mechanism to expel and decimate the Hindu-Sikh-Buddhist population probably in expectation of Muslims from India to arrive, under the full view of the then Governor General of Pakistan Jinnah. When Pakistan became a serious political proposition after the statement of Clement Atlee, the then British Prime Minister, on February 20, 1947 and progressively as August 15, 1947 approached, the Muslim pace of eliminating non-Muslims from Pakistan was accelerated. Just on the eve of August 15 and after, when Jinnah was proclaiming his secularist credential in his speech, it became a ruthless driving out, an all-out campaign. Jinnah, as the first Governor General of Pakistan, had all the means to control the situation, but he was then busy preparing for the invasion of Kashmir, which took place on October 20 1947.

 

Exchange of population or even driving out of the Hindu and the Sikh population from the Muslim State, was inherent in the very conception of the State of Pakistan. When Pakistan was established, this inevitable finale to the process of its establishment was executed with equal zeal and collaboration by the people (Muslims) and Government of Pakistan. The process of elimination of minorities went on without check by the Muslim police, officials, and military, all under the control of Jinnah. On the contrary, they abetted the process. No responsible Pakistan or Muslim League leaders condemned such attacks on Hindus, Buddhist and Sikhs.

 

Governor Mudie of West Punjab revealed in his letter to Jinnah his determination to throw Sikhs out of Pakistan at all cost. Jinnah did not have a word to utter about the murder of over 800 Sikhs in Karachi on January 6, 1948 nor for the matter of that, a word about the massacres of Noakhali, the Northwestern Frontier Province, Rawalpindi, Multan or any other mass slaughtering of the non-Muslims.

 

Jinnah´s Islamic credential

 

Partition had its genesis in the Muslim refusal to live as equal partners with the non-Muslim in India after having ruled over them for centuries from 664 AD before the European took over. Partition could also be attributed to Jinnah´s personal ambition of becoming the overlord of a part of India, when he knew that he could never be in charge of India as a whole.

 

The Two-Nation Theory has its roots in Islam´s two-world theory that splits humanity into Momins and Kafirs….. Believers and Infidels. It is the history, the political culture, and the passion of the Muslims to live in Dar-ul Islam, or the Abode of Islam. Muslims everywhere have always striven to live within it. Islam even makes it the onerous duty of every Muslim, should he be unfortunate enough to find himself therein, to quit Dar-ul-Harb (the House of War, or Non-Islam) and to seek refuge in a land ruled by a Muslim State. Pakistan was the dream of the Muslims in India before 1947 and Jinnah made that dream into a reality.

 

In the national legislative elections held in 1945 across British India, the Muslim League captured all the 30 seats reserved for the Muslims in the Central Assembly; and in the elections for state legislatures in 1946, the Muslim League won 439 of the 494 seats allotted to Muslims in all British Indian states. Congress had then ceased to represent the Muslims.

 

The Cabinet Mission Plan of May 16, 1946 was intended to divide India into the states grouped into Hindu and Muslim majority groups: (a) Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Central Province, Bombay and Madras;(b) Assam and Bengal; (c) Punjab, North West Frontier Province and Sindh. The Congress party agreed to this scheme. The Muslim League accepted it first, but rejected it subsequently, and announced in August 1946, its plan of Direct Action, as announced by Jinnah himself. This led to the outbreak of riots against the non-Muslims in Calcutta in August 1946 and in Noakhali in Chittagong area of East Bengal.

 

The riots soon spread through Bihar to Rawalpindi in Punjab, and the North West Frontier Province. The statement in the House of Commons by Clement Attlee on February 22, 1947, that Britain was handing over power by June 1948, set the smoldering fires into a full blaze. Riots broke out in Rawalpindi district in March 1947, and Nehru flew over the riot affected areas, and was shown the deep well into which the Sikhs and the Hindu women had jumped to save their honour. He then agreed to the principle of partition of Punjab, which had been vigorously demanded by the Sikhs all along in Punjab and later by the Hindus in Bengal as well. Jinnah had never condemned the riots or the massacres.

 

When Jinnah was proclaiming his secularist credential in his speech, campaign against the non-Muslims became a ruthless driving out, an all-out mass-murder. Jinnah, as the first Governor General of Pakistan, had all the means to control the situation, but he did not.

 

Conclusion

 

Although Gandhi and Nehru were not directly responsible for the partition, but they perhaps had contributed towards it by their actions or inactions. Before Gandhi came to India, Hindus and Muslims were united in their struggle for freedom. The song Vande Mataram became the national song because of Muslim Abdul Rasul, who was presiding over the Bengal Congress Provincial Conference session of 1906 in Barisal when hundreds were struck down and grievously injured by the British police for singing Vande Mataram. That brutality at Barisal popularized the song overnight; Surendranath Banerjee, then the leader of The Congress joined in an unprecedented procession of Hindus and Muslims singing national songs and crying Vande Mataram. That unity was destroyed when Gandhi started his Khilafat Movement in 1919 to support a murderous despotic Sultan of Turkey, who had committed genocide by killing 2.5 million Armenians and Greeks in the Ottoman Turkey and who was deeply unpopular in the Arab world subjugated by the Turks. It was a reactionary movement, which had strengthened the hands of the most violent backward-minded Muslims, and split The Congress party. Most of the leaders of The Congress, Anne Bessant, Chittaranjan Das, Surendranath Banerjee, Motilal Nehru, and Bipin Pal left Congress, which was paralyzed by Gandhi, and the Muslim League became stronger.

 

In 1938, when Subhas Chandra Bose was elected the president of the Congress party, the most popular leader of the Muslims in Bengal Fazlul Haque wanted to collaborate with the Congress, but was rejected by Gandhi. When Subhas Bose was expelled from The Congress by Gandhi, Fazlul Haque joined hands with Jinnah. With Fazlul Haque in The Congress, Muslim League would not be able to partition Bengal. Similarly, Gandhi has rejected Khan Abdul Gaffer Khan and his North West Frontier Province, which had a Congress majority but was included in Pakistan. Asad Khan, the representative of the Khan of Kalat, the ruler of Baluchistan came to Gandhi so that Baluchistan could be within India, but Gandhi rejected him too. General Wavell had tried until the last moment to keep India united, but Gandhi sent a telegram to Clement Attlee, the then Prime-Minister of Britain to replace General Wavell. Sri Aurobindo had advised Gandhi to accept the Cabinet Mission Plan to keep India united, but Gandhi asked Sri Aurobindo not to interfere in political matter. It is still a mystery why Gandhi wanted partition so much, that, according to BR Ambedkar, even in 1940, Gandhi had accepted the Pakistan-proposal and in 1943 in collaboration with Chakravarty Rajagopalachari, had drawn up a detail plan to partition India. Perhaps he though if he could give in to the demands of the Muslim League, lives of the non-Muslims would be spared. However, that does not wash out the sin of Jinnah, who had unleashed a terror campaign against the non-Muslims of British India to create his beloved Pakistan.

 

The life of Jinnah and his activities demonstrates very clearly that he was a man driven by the idea of an Islamic State for the Muslims although it would mean destruction of lives of millions and uprootment of millions more. The revisionists Pakistani historians like Ayahs Jalap along with the pro-Pakistani American historian Stanley Wilbert, journalist NorAm of The Hindu and The Frontline had tried to put a lot of emphasis on the life of Jonah before 1937, however a close analysis of that life would show a deeply devoted Muslim living in an Anglo-Saxon world and trying to gain acceptability from the British rulers by emulating the outward styles of the ruler. He was a perfect example of the type of Muslims, Syed Ahmed Khan, the founder of the Aligarh University, had advocated to enhance the interests of the Muslims in British India.

 

As a successful lawyer Jinnah was a very good actor, giving different speeches to satisfy different audience, yet at the same time was extremely ruthless and determined to achieve his target to create a state only according to Islam, where the non-Muslims would have to accept the supremacy of the Islamic way of life. This is not secularism in any sense of the term. The constitution of Pakistan, which he had proposed and was implemented in 1955, was for the Islamic State of Pakistan, not a secular State.

 

By all accounts, Jinnah has committed crimes against humanity. He was a ruthless killer, because of whom millions of non-Muslims were killed, dishonoured and became destitute in 1947. All these because he wanted to fulfill the dream of Iqbal, the fanatic Muslim poet, the Pakistan, the land for the Muslims only. It is a criminal offence in Europe and in Germany in particular if anyone would try to justify or minimize the crime of Hitler and his Nazi party. Similar criminal law should be implemented in India as well for those who want to glorify Jinnah, a mass-murderer of the same level as Hitler, and his Muslim League.
