Most Muslims in India are Sunnis. The Shias comprise of about 10–15% of total Muslim population in India.

The Sunni being biggest Islamic sect is not a single sect but is divided into different sub-sects.

Indian Sunnis are divided into two major branches.

  1. Barelwi (those inclined towards Sufism)
  2. Deobandi (fundamentalists)

Barelwis are also divided into many sub-groups, some are cult like groups, adhering to peeri-muridi system and blindly following their peers who sometimes exploits them.

Deobandis are also divided into sub-groups. There are Ahle-Hadis who are similar to Deobandis in beliefs but differ in practice.

The Barelwis and Deobandis are all divided into at least four sub-sects when it comes to following Islam. There are Hanfi, Shafa’i, Maliki and Hanbali Sunni Muslims. While Ahle-Hadis Muslims don’t follow any of these four sects and only follow Quran and Hadis.

There are at least three sects among Sunni Muslims when it comes to believing in God, his actions and attributes. These three sects are Asharis, Mutazilis and Maturidis.

Most of the Sunnis are ignorant about their faith and less practicing. Most Shias are knowledgeable and practicing. Sunnis persecute Shias for their beliefs and practices.
